Sorry. I used 144 for simplicity assuming it would have to be square rooted at the end.
The first actual number I'm using is 40 feet due NE of my x,y.
The sin formula gives me 34.xxx and the algebra equation gives me 28.xxx.

If the hypotenuse is 40, the sides are 28.3 x 28.3

Then something is wrong on your end. The answer is the same whether you use a trig function or an algebraic equation based on the pythagorean theorem.
I always tend to go the algebraic route as you don't need a scientific calculator to get your answer. Also you can screw up trig functions by getting degrees and radians mixed up.
