The fact that mittens, gloves, socks, etc., all can be expressed in the singular -mitten, glove, socks, etc.- is the remedy for your angst…

The other day after my son’s practice I found a single left shoe on the field. Half of a pair of cleats. You’d think one of the kids out there, or at least one of their parents, would notice a missing shoe. But nobody claims it. Here it remains, abandoned and facing an eternity in a landfill.
