Up security in tourist areas and where tax payers live. The criminals will go back to the hoods that theI came from and destroy each other. All cities have their bad, poor areas with high crime. It's what they do and we can't change them. I do not and never have lived in Nola but it is still my favorite city. If I had a solid job offer any where's near there Id take it in a heart beat. All of the bashing on the city here and I've got family there who have little to no complaints. Sure there's problems but what issues does Nola have that every other large doesn't?

White flighters

Ain't just white flight. Lots of decent, hard working black families moved to the suburbs too so they could get away from the crime in the city

It is not just Mitch, it's the whole system in NOLA, the next mayor will be no better. I know there are some good people in NOLA, but the rest of Louisiana (like me) disassociated ourselves from that place long ago.

Isn't Alabama buying the statues? Keep them safe Bama!

They apparently were not controversial until Wynton Marsalis deemed them to be.

So did your parents ever tell you which one of them dropped you on your head when you were a baby?

Hopefully Mitch ends up in prison before it's over with.

Surprised no one ever brings up the reason that Mitch instituted the NOPD hiring freeze. It's because his family has interests in a private security company this more crime = more demand for private security.

Logic
Here's some logic for you. None of you all give a damn about crime in NOLA, you're just jumping on anything negative about the city to assuage your snowflake BUTTHURT over the Monuments to the Leaders of the Lost Cause.

every one of my friends in uptown has either been robbed at gunpoint, shot, jumped, home robbed or had to cover their kids from gunshots during carnival on St. Charles.
I lived in midtown for 15 years and had my company car stolen 3 times and stopped a 4th attempt. Plus me and a date were jumped in the FQ.
I left 6 years ago and have not looked back. Miss seeing my friends regularly but feel much safer in Houston. Plus many of my oil and gas friends had to relocate here so no lack of LSU and La. culture/food.

You probably dripped tobacco juice on your keyboard as you typed that huh bubba.
Nola is the best city and the best thing going for this state despite the recent uptick in crime on tourist.
News alert, this state is last in EVERYTHING that matters. It's a shite hole. So don't go patting yourself on the back that you are in La, but not in Nola so you are great.
dumb fcks.
And for you younger folks, Nola crime was twice as bad in the 90's as it is now. The corruption back then was 10 times as bad. Marc Morial and his political machine along with William Jefferson could do as they pleased and appointed many friends and family to positions to help get them all rich.
And for the white flight comments, do you all realize that the whites folks have returned to the city in big numbers in the last 10 years? Nola is probably whiter now than it's been in 30 years.
Ok, rant over.
Yes Nola has a big problem with crime and poverty. It needs to be fixed. The crime in tourist areas is indeed the number one problem right now.

Solving a crime problem in a city is very easy. It just takes a few, simple adjustments:
1.) Put cameras everywhere. Make them as unnoticeable as possible.
2.) Legalize marijuana
3.) Come down hard on violent crimes.
- Mandatory death penalty for murder executed 2 months after conviction
- Mandatory 50 year sentence for gun crimes such as assault and armed robbery.
- Mandatory 30 year sentence for violent crimes not involving guns.
4.) Gentrify the bad areas. Drive the price of housing up and put in stiffer rules for Section 8 housing.
If you do all of these things the crime rate would plummet.

Lived here all my life. I used to defend the shite out of this city despite the crime and whatnot. The older i get, the more I wanna get the frick out.

Gentrification cannot withstand long-term positive results if the crime continues to worsen. Foreseeable future, maybe, but no way long-term.

Logic fail. We talked about NOLA crime way before the statue nonsense.

This won't be a deterrent to criminal activity it will create a reactive police force instead of a proactive police force. The criminals don't care about the cameras.
Cameras have to part of a proactive process where you have people monitoring the cameras 24/7 in conjunction with active officers who will be able to quickly react to suspicious activity.
2.) Legalize marijuana
For tax dollars yes not a bad idea because this is largely a street industry. However the second you legalize it that means the criminals will have to resort to other types of illegal activity to supplement their loss of business from the sale of weed.
4.) Gentrify the bad areas. Drive the price of housing up and put in stiffer rules for Section 8 housing.
(Section 8 housing assistance has a 3 yr limit unless person in the family has medical issues. After 3 yrs Section 8 housing must convert into Affordable Housing program where residents must have a job.)
Other areas they need to fix are:
Eliminating blighted buildings in New Orleans as these properties promote criminal activity. There is a direct correlation to the crime rate to the blight rate and this is something that Ray Nagin must be given credit for as he got rid of thousands of blighted properties post-Katrina. Landrieu and the council haven't done shite in this regards. You can replicate a historic property after its torn down. No sense to have these properties sit for 40 years before someone fixes them up. Blighted properties can be seized by the city and sold Free and Clear of all liens via an online Auction so we can put these back into commerce.
Eliminate non-profits from being exempt from property taxes as this is a huge area of fraud and lost revenue for the state and local governments.
Make the tax assessor assess all properties every two years and get rid of the Homestead exemption.
Improve lighting in all city parks and streets.
Eliminate the Private-Public partnership stuff which is used to circumvent public disclosure laws by prohibiting local and state government from providing grants to those organizations unless they agree that all records are publicly disclosed.
If you do all of these things the crime rate would plummet.

lest you forget Sydney Barthomew and the job creating warehouse (that had a fire) that just sat there in NOLA east so that commuters home to Slidell could feel superior.
