quote:it depends on what you want to do and how long you want to be out. Over the road is for some and dedicated is for others. I do dedicated which os a type of linehaul. I'm out and back. I don't continue on around the country. I'm regional and do the same routes. I also do back hauls.
Over the road or line haul?

Good seating is key. Nice cushioned seat is good. Not being obese helps too. Lol.

Ok, buddy of mine drives line haul for Dayton Freight. He loves it. home in the evenings and weekends off with sick leave and vacation and good benefits.
Neighbor drives for UPS. He loves it and loves his Teamster contract they just got. Interesting story he told me that other Teamsters look out for other Teamsters on the road and support each other.

Explains a lot BUT still one mph is worth taking 5 minutes to pass a rig and backing up traffic?? God bless you though I can’t drive to work at 5 am without losing my shite because there will be a line of 15 cars in the fast lane and the other two lanes are empty. Your patience must be unmatched of how bad of drivers people have become.

quote:you would be amazed at the stupidity I see on the road by regular class E drivers. Also big riggers will attempt to pass if they got a 1mph difference in speed. I don't do it unless traffic is low.

Do you prefer driving at night or during the day?
What was the most difficult part of learning to be a driver?
I fairly often travel through VA on I-81. The scenery is nice in the day, but it just seems that drivers are more courteous at night. It's mostly trucks on the road then, and if you do the little things, like flash lights to let them know they can come over, they reciprocate.

quote:backing. Learning the 90 degree back/45 degree back/offset back. Then doing these backings in real docks/doors. Also learning to keep up in real traffic.

Why doesn't Swift hire better drivers? Do they pay worse than everyone else?

quote:swift along with other major companies employ new drivers. Once they have 6 mos/yr/18mos etc they move on to better jobs. Swift has a very high turnover rate. Not sure about their pay but they have a huge company and many drivers which means more mistakes I guess? What have you heard about them?

A guy I know has a sweet dedicated run. He leaves Baton Rouge on Monday morning with a tank to Detroit. In Detroit they empty the tank and since it's a dedicated tank he brings it back to BR empty. He gets back to BR on Thursday and might do a local run on Friday morning, but he often has a three day weekend.
