I think queer is their preferred umbrella term. Why it hasn’t replaced the alphabet term by now is puzzling. May be because the word queer has historically been a derogative word.
~40yo gay man here, and I bristle at the term “queer”, but it seems to be the term of choice for those who are edgier/younger than me. “Queer” is also a bit more ambiguous and—in my opinion—is frequently used by people that aren’t actually gay but want to be part of the community; to feel unique.

The one I can’t understand is the man who wants to be a woman…
I also don’t understand this, but plenty of people don’t understand how I could be attracted to a man. Ultimately, my take is that you don’t have to understand to accept.

Back in the day gender was just co*k, balls, and sugar walls.

The only people I've known to actively prefer the "queer" label were those who considered themselves gender non-binary. I don't know any cisgendered homosexuals who refer to themselves as such. Though I'll also hear it as a catch all in phrases like "queer literature", etc, even among those who wouldn't use the term for themselves.

You sound like one of my good friends, he’s gay, everyone knows, but he still has common sense. My BIL is and I have no issue, but he’s def more into the “progress”.
I don’t care what one does but I don’t understand why straight men are like the evil people here. We really don’t care.
I also did ask my kid if they play “games” at recess like we used to and he had no clue. I think y’all can figure out what I’m saying. So I do say that’s good but I got smeared many times

As long as no tax dollars are involved I’m all for people living their lives as they want.

It's for "queer", and it means anything that isn't normal. Like if there was a straight couple and the chick doesn't like to wear dresses or the dude does. Boom, they're now special alphabet people and not normal evil straight people. It's stupid.

Apparently “allies” of the LGBT community are trying to get added to the list too. Allies as in non-LGBT people that still support them. They want acknowledgment for their virtue signaling
Kind of a side thing but apparently it used to be known as GLB. For feminists reasons gays were pushed behind lesbians
