Two youtube videos that will help

Whenever a pilot says that, obviously that means they'll go faster. My question: why not just go fast all the time then?

Why don't planes fly faster - Wendover Productions (11 minutes)

Do you think the jet engine is only “stop/go” and the air resistance is “yes/no”?

Speed limit

First answer that makes sense.

There’s no speed limit above 10,000 ft so, no, it doesn’t make sense.

You're not flying. It's teleportation.

You need to open your eyes.

Not all do. Aside from things like 1st class, handicapped, etc. JetBlue boards from the back to the front, I believe Southwest does this too (but I may be misremembering that, it's been a while).

Boarding back to front makes it go so damned much faster because you aren't constantly bottlenecking every other passenger when someone in the first row wasn't smart enough to understand that just because you can force something into your rollerboard doesn't mean it's going to fit in the overhead bin.

Pilots make time up in the air because that is where they can. Can't make lost time up on the ground.

If a plane leaves point A at the scheduled departure time and makes up "lost" time in the air, arriving 30 minutes early at point B, a good chance their assigned gate is occupied. This is because the plane already there is not scheduled to leave for 30 minutes.

So the pilot can wait at the originating location for 30 minutes and get to the destination location on time by making the time up in the air.

And the other option is to wait on the tarmac at the destination for 30 minutes which is never a fun time.

Does that always hold true?

Say flying transatlantic in lanes? Or are the gaps considered when your flight plan is filed?

Genuine question, not sure if I posed the questions right.

Generally, above 10,000 MSL speed is unrestricted, unless specified on a departure/arrival route or ATC assigned. On the North Atlantic Tracks(NAT) your speed is assigned in your oceanic clearance.

To the OP, you can also request directs on your route, fly faster, and/or change altitude(if able) for more advantageous winds.

Plus, think of the fuel they would save if they went faster!

I always board last. I’m not poor, so I pay for checked bags. By boarding last, they close the door behind me when I get on and we leave. I walk to my assigned seat that is usually in the front, and I’m the first to get off.

Less time on the plane = better flying experience.

Always chuckle when the goobers try to rush on and fight for overhead space.

Ah yes, the people that can afford $1,000 for first class seats but can't be bothered to pay to check in the bag that is clearly larger than the measurements Delta requires for carry on.

First-class doesn't pay for bags, dude.

<-- First-wave millennial, btw.
