Design if I recall correctly
Eta: there are many bridges in this country who have exceeded their designed lifespans and are in bad shape. There are many more that while still within their designed lifespan are in poor condition due to lack of maintenance. It all comes down to money.

and I went over that thing for the first time ever a few months ago... it's like straight up... fricking scared me more than going over Huey P Long Bridge in NOLA before they redid that 1

Part of an I-10 bridge in CA got washed away last week from bad weather.
Right now you cannot drive from BR to Los Angeles without a detour, however, they're planning on opening one lane until it's completely repaired.
I try not to think about stuff like this when I'm driving long distances.

I was just catching the end of it but it was, I believe largely an inspection issue. Now they have these things that they can put on the pressure points that alerts when a crack is widening and should be fixed.
ETA: Looks like it was a little of all 3.

Eighteen cents a gallon isn't even enough to cover maintenance. I believe the tax for infrastructure has only gone up once since It's inception (from 15 to 18). I get that the government is ridiculously wasteful, but 18 cents per gallon is a joke imo. At least that is what I feel when I am driving over an elevated death trap.

Undermined abutment foundations, pilings that were poured on site with piss poor quality control now with structural cracks and fissures, beams steel and concrete that have been overloaded for years thar no longer have any camber in them and can no longer flex, iron and steel structures rusted to nothing, poorly patched holes in the decks that have caused reinforcing steel to become comprised just to name a few.
