I-10 widening design chosen for Baton Rouge area; new bridge over lake looks pretty good

Glad they won't be putting the taller sound barriers on the bridge over the lake. They are doing it most everywhere else, which is going to make the route feel like a tunnel.
Looks like the right choice, especially considering their goal is to convert to this design while keeping at least 2 lanes open in either direction during construction.
Construction on the widening of I-10 between West Baton Rouge and I-12 in Baton Rouge is starting in 2022, and will last anywhere from 7 to 150 years, depending on who you ask.

Voters in an online poll chose arches and pelicans for a new Interstate 10 bridge planned for Louisiana’s capital city.
The state Department of Transportation and Development launched the poll earlier this year to determine the design of a new interstate bridge to cross the lake at Baton Rouge’s City Park. The public was asked to pick among four bridge designs and three monument tower options.
The Advocate reports the winning bridge design features arched and rectangular exterior panels and arches between the columns when viewed from beneath the bridge. The monument tower selected will pay tribute to the pelican, both the brown pelican that is Louisiana’s state bird and the white pelicans that flock to the lake annually.

If you count the College Drive flyover, work has already started.

Which bridge? The one over City Park Lake is in the design. The new one over the Mississippi River is an entirely different project that will be funded with bonds issued on future toll revenue.

Exactly

We will all be dead before this thing will see completion.

I was pretty surprised at how fast the expansion project from Highland to 73 went, but there are a lot more obstructions with this project, and this project is a lot bigger than the one that was just completed.

Yeah this might be one of the last urban freeway expansions to happen in Louisiana.
This section is largely elevated and goes through a developed urban core. And the sections have to be replaced, not just widened. So it's going to be a massive project.

It’ll never be ready in time.

And the change orders will put 1000 contractors, architects, engineers, and politicians’ kids and grandkids through college.

Probably not. But their grandkids will watch the money be splurged in some Louisiana politician's pocket.

It'll look good when we fly over it in our flying cars.

Why is the Westbound entrance to I-10 from College still a left hand turn???? That should be an easy fix. My dad remembers when they had plans to fix it back in the 80's... Here we are, 30+ years later.
And they're getting rid of other on and off ramps? College traffic is going to be even more of a nightmare than it already is.

Because it would be racist to tear down those ghetto houses and build and ramp through there. That's literally the reason. A big deal was made about it in the 2000s.
