Safe to assume this wasn't a Catholic priest.

because to do it in "their" bed would be sacrilegious?

This is what they're clapping for. Because normal people know this is true.
Judgmental, intolerant, self-righteous hypocrites like you do not.

This pastor gets up on the pulpit every week preaching to his congregation...and goes and has an affair with one of his married congregation members, probably tearing apart a family that has young kids. And these people still applaud him after his "apology"...I wonder if the husband hadn't come home early and caught the pastor with his wife in the act...would this pastor have had the conscience to get in front of his congregation and admit his sin and ask for forgiveness? He only apologized because he got caught....but I'm an intolerant, self-righteous hypocrite?

Made my day with that. Would've been severely disappointed if nobody had stepped up.

Most "ministers" are little more than degenerate whores.
I had an acquaintance some years back than ran a cathouse in Monroe. His primary clientele??? Ministers.
Most ministers have a high sense of entitlement and want your "three P's". Your pocketbook, your pussy (i.e., wanting to "minister" to your wife), and your pantry (as in trying to mooch a free meal here and there.
I lost my marriage to one of those assholes in the Louisiana United Methodist Conference. The wife left, and I had to finish raising the kids on my own.
I always love how they try to hide behind "God's forgiveness." They want everyone to forgive them, but they have no intention of making things right or constructively trying to mitigate the damage and hurt they caused.
In my case, I was told to "rely on God." My reply was to "F%%k God, frick you, and frick your goddamned church." The "reply on God" thing???? shite, that and $4.35 will buy me a large hot latte at McDonalds.
I will never believe in those bastards again. I have lost all faith in the church. My personal contention is that most of those bastards and bitches should be lined up and summarily shot.

Any real church would fire him immediately and bar him from official ministry.
You would be surprised how churches will try to cover this shite up or at minimum, dismiss it.
It took me almost three years to get anything, and then it was under the threat of a lawsuit and the publicity that the La UMC would suffer.
One minister was moved out to the middle of nowhere and per my understanding took a $40K cut in annual salary in the process.
The female one, finally got her orders set aside for life.
The other one? Well, it is my understanding that a number of husbands through Louisiana and Texas are hunting for his arse. He stays on the run.
Many churches will get what they want and they do not give one goddamn who they roll over or the damage they do in getting what they want.

The pastor needs to get the shite kicked out of him.

Damn, you've gotta have an incredible ability to close to go from talking about poor kids to banging.

Sorry, but after my two kids and I got shite on, the church's anemic stand was totally unacceptable.
As for the ex (aka "the defendant"), she absconded to Pennsylvania. Last look at her, she looks like she either has an eating disorder or is rotting of something inside her. Wouldn't piss on her even if she was on fire.
Seven years of therapy did nothing. I can only wish the guilty parties a slow and painful death.
Meanwhile, after the financial fallout from the divorce, I am living a better lifestyle. In her case, the bitch will actually have to work the rest of her life as my lawyer scored me the house, all financial assets, and (the big one) my retirement.

Actually, that would be too kind. I like the old Hannibal Lector approach - strip him, snip him, and sting him up - ......bowels out. If his parents are still alive, if he has a wife and children, make them all watch.
Many go into the ministry because they can't make it doing anything else (insurance, used cars, etc.). Many of them are alcoholics, drug addicts, philanderers, etc.
My Sunday mornings are more enjoyable reading the newspaper, enjoying coffee and breakfast.

I wonder if there is any scientific evidence backing how much more intelligent and reasonable those without religious beliefs are

First, I'm with you on that one and the answer is frick no. They are only regretful about getting caught.

I was at Sammy's bar one Saturday morning and had to listen to one of these forgiving sheep vomit praise about his church and all their charitable work.
He was drinking pretty heavily the whole time.
When he spewed on about how great Dino Rizzo was, I started laughing out loud.
It took some self control not to yell out across the bar that Dino is womanizer and a charlatan.
Forgiveness is a helluva drug.
