re: Huntington Ingalls agrees to sell former Avondale Shipyard

Nola doesn't have the setup to handle large container ships. If I'm not mistaken, there's only 4 gantry cranes in the city docks(if there's more, it's only 2). The height of the bridges above the city make container terminals pointless.
Space is probably a big factor now. That's why I think Avondale would have been a great spot(with a higher bridge). Investing in the future was wasted imo

And yes, the trip up and down the river has to factor into business decision I would think
It doesn't as much as people like to think it does

Heard that was going in the Times Pic building. Did it fall through?

Please explain the river pilot piracy part. I'm genuinely interested.

The river boat pilots get paid stupid money. You have to basically be born into it. It's almost like a modern day mob

Containers are mostly consumer goods and therefore population driven. They want to get them as close to where they are ultimately going by ship. That is still the cheapest way compared to rail and truck no matter how far upriver they have to go, The area just can't compete with places like Houston that feed all the way to Austin, San Antonio , Dallas etc.
What he said. NOLA is unattractive because of distance from the MS delta to the unloading docks and, mainly, population. Houston is naturally easier to dock and has an instant market for consumer goods.
Really no other factors involved.

Ships over a certain length going up the mississippi have to pick up a river pilot in pilottown and pay them a decent sum (ransom) to "navigate them" up the river.
With GPS and such this should not be necessary.
But they have a strong lobby and this isnt going away.
Its legalized piracy

Every day brings new challenges on the river based on current, depth, traffic, etc. You will always need human judgement.
That's not to say that the current system is not corrupt and should not be changed.

Huntington Ingalls
How come rich dudes always have wussy names like this?
Those are two different people.
Huntington was Collis P. Huntington who built Newport News Shipyard (and also was a major investor in the C&O Railroad, the Central Pacific Railroad, and the Southern Pacific Railroad).
Ingalls was Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Sr. who built the Ingalls Shipyard.

Here's a little fun history of the Pilots........
quote:
Before pilot associations and fee commissions there were unregulated, ruthless pilots monitoring the river in hopes of catching the first sight of an incoming ship. Aggressive pilots often strayed far out to sea in order to beat their competitors. Likewise, many ships had to wait unlimited hours in the dangerous waters for a pilot to just happen by. On many occasions two pilots would reach the ship at the same time and race to be the first to get on board, each scrambling up opposite sides of the boat. In the end the toughest and fastest won, not the most knowledgeable and skilled. In New Orleans, shrewd businessmen with no inclination toward piloting would hire any sailor, buccaneer, or drifter to work the ships and then keep the fees for themselves.

A car would be easier to control and we see how far we are in automated auto transportation.
You want to have unmanned 900 foot ships going up and down one of the most dangerous rivers in the world based off of GPS. Lol

You are clueless
It's a massive river with constantly changing currents, sand bars, trees, and other hidden obstacles that a computer can't just learn. Knowledge of the river and how to run it is why it's such a family business. You can't just bring someone in and throw them in a captains chair, much less throw a ship carrying chemicals or oil products on cruise control

I saw with my own eyes a river boat pilot who was on 'vacation' in Baton Rouge throw out an ounce of blow on a counter top and told the party to 'dig in'. Then hands a guy $1200 cash to go get another.
I was impressed. So impressed I left the party after an appetizer and walked to Ivars. frickkkkk that noise. I'm just a baby to them fricking crazy fricks.
Tldr they are rich and crazy.
