I watched my little sister after school as a kid for a couple hours. Rode my bike with neighbors when I was in first grade.

Once he can get his own beer out of the fridge, you are good to go.....

Depends on the neighborhood, the maturity of the kid and how long he is to stay alone. We were latch key kids many years ago but times have changed. I would think that a 9 year old would need some supervision.

For us, it's not just one answer but a range, depending on how long and how far away parent(s) are going to be. For us, it was something like the following:
Less than 1 hr; close-by (a few miles): maybe 11-12
Couple of hours and close-by: 13-14
Most of the night and/or an hour's drive away: 15-16
Overnight and out of town: 17+ (although we still get typically get a grandparent to stay overnight, which I think is overkill, but Mama thinks otherwise).

13+ should be able to remain home alone.

From age 5 until age 6, and the youngest of 6 kids, I was the 1st one home. I was usually there for at least 30 minutes before the next 8 and 9 year old brothers got home. I had the only key, never lost it and there never was a problem. That was in the 70's though, I think people go to jail for that now.
How young a child home alone can be depends on a lot of things, the family in general, the neighborhood, the length of time the kid is unsupervised and mostly the kid.

Depends on the child but once you hit 9 or 10 you're good for a few hours. 13 is the mark for overnight.

I was riding a 3 wheeler (which aren't even legal anymore) around my country arse neighborhood when I was 9 years old.

In Louisiana, law is 12 or 13.
