Look man, I'm ignorant of how it's enforced in Louisiana. But if you're in north Florida or south Alabama and you kill one, it's best not let a cop or a game warden or a ranger find out. You can trust me several times over on that one.
I hear ya, I wasn't trying to punk you or anything. Just trying to understand where you're coming from. The season in LA is only a month long and only open to a limited number of trappers, you'd be in a bind here as well if you killed one.

If it was not moose season and he shot it in defense then he cannot legally salvage the meat. The law is in place to prevent people from shooting game animals out of season and claiming self defense just to get the meat.
I had to stand by and watch a 400 pound black bear turn sour as I waited 6 hours for g&f to arrive. They claimed the animal and supposedly ran tests to determine the cause of the aggression.
Anyone saying they would do this or that different aren't really taking into account the adrenaline dump you get when a animal that size tries to kill you. Hind sight is 20/20.

but deer meat isn't the purpose of going hunting. It's a nice byproduct, but it's not the purpose.
deer meat is 100% the purpose of me hunting deer

I'm struggling to find a big difference that makes one terrible and one admirable. Two animals were killed. One was shot in self-defense after it was agitated (if you view it in the most negative light).
Really? So if I walk up to your dog, start punching it in the face, and then it attacks me, you would be cool with me killing it?

The other was shot after it had been baited/fed for an entire year.
I don't bait.

Since when did the OT become such pussies?

Probably could have done something different but the moose came at him twice, looked like it was going for round three. I find it hard to blame the guy.
This.

I guarantee the majority of the OB would disagree with you

ETA: Just saw you narrowed it to yourself. Unfortunately, I don't think the majority of hunters do it for the sole purpose of obtaining deer meat.
quote:Not at all what happened here. And you're comparing a wild, extremely dangerous moose which is harvested for meat to a household, domesticated dog which, hopefully, is not harvested for meat. Not a great analogy comparing wild game to a household animal.
Really? So if I walk up to your dog, start punching it in the face, and then it attacks me, you would be cool with me killing it?
quote:That's admirable, but you're in the minority. May I ask why you don't bait, since the only reason you hunt is for deer meat?

Roger, you seem like a reasonable person, but this guy is an idiot plain and simple. The video tells the story. It wasn't like he turned a corner or had an obstructed view of what lay in front of him. He stopped so close to it, I'm surprised he didn't tell his son to try to pet it. This man lives in the wilderness but doesn't know not to tailgate a moose almost guaranteeing a confrontation? The only smart thing he did was bringing a firearm on his excursion. Of course he had to take it down after he put himself and his son in that situation. Something tells me catching tadpoles on the banks of the Nile is in this genius's future (son in tow).
