re: How to make Punks slow down when driving through your neighborhood.

I can understand that, there are some little shitheads out there.Prior to my son, I hated the little brats poping up from no where. I was one of the exact punks that I am now bitching about. If everyone that passed down our street slowed down 5MPH it would be alot safer for EVERYONE and only take them 5 seconds longer to get home... 5 SECONDS.... That's all I'm asking...

Another thing, a lot of subdivisions are 25mph, that can look like 40 if you live in a neighborhood with narrow streets and close houses.
This is a good point, too. The speed limit is 25 in my neighborhood, but when I go 25 through it I feel like a fricking NASCAR driver.

Sometimes it looks worse than it is - best bet is to supervise your kids if they're outside, or keep them out of the streets altogether.
You just can't legislate crazy, dumbass drivers.

The OP wasn't being a badass BTW as people were trying to say. He came to us with a legitimate question about what we thought he/she should do.
Will the police really use your driveway as a launching point for high speed pursuits?

that is pretty shitty parenting if your kid is able to escape over and over again

People let their kids out like this all of the time, and it's not just my neighborhood. I'm not saying that is the children playing that you are defending, but it's all over the place. Why are kids not playing in the back yard?
Are you serious? Some of us live in nice neighborhoods so our kids can feel safe playing outside of confinement. When you are operating a vehicle you need to use the absolute highest degree of care. That includes understanding that kids off their leashes will sometimes do stupid stuff.

you shouldn't have stupid kids. I played outside all the time but it was in yards and fields like a smart kid instead of in the road where vehicles belong.

So a 7 year old kid hit by a car while he rides his bike or runs out in the street to get a ball is stupid?

You don't have kids, do you? I know some really smart kids who do some really stupid things. My kids are bright and make good choices, but you just never know. Plus, I'm turning into a grouchy old bastard and I like to bitch about this kind of stuff.

I'm not saying your kid has to be in a pen in the back yard, but there's no need to be playing two feet from the street. I've seen kids kicking footballs along the street and every other one causes a car to hit its brakes so the kid run to can get the ball, I've seen little girls coloring with sidewalk chalk at the very end of the driveway when they could easily be further away from the road. In my opinion, they are making the road a dangerous situation for themselves more often than cars are.
And it really doesn't matter why you move to a neighborhood, it doesn't give kids the right to take over the streets. If your kid will "sometimes do stupid stuff", then I don't think they should be by the road unsupervised. You have to think of the other poeple in the neighborhood as well. I will always drive with the absolute highest degree of care, but I shouldn't have to worry about kids doing stupid things.

Actually, you do have a legal obligation to assume children will not act rationally around you when you operate a vehicle. That's mostly because children do not act rationally sometimes. It's like science or something. They aren't held to the standards of adults - can't make contracts or consent to sex.
We play in the streets in my neighborhood. We bike, jog, play catch... it's just part of the deal. We watch for cars - "Game off!!" But shite happens, and driving too fast in any residential area is stupid and dangerous.

Pedestrians and cyclist have the right of way in this setting.........As a driver you have a legal and moral responsibility to accept and abide by that.....

Bingo. Welcome to adulthood.

My husband lived on one of the busier streets in a subdivision as a child and kids often sped up and down leaving a high school close by. One afternoon, a man who lived at one end of the street heard them coming as he was doing yard work. He flung his push mower into the street, and that stopped them pretty promptly. He happened to be a cop as well, so gave them a stern talking to, and said he would see that they were ticketed next time, and their parents contacted. Word got around, and it worked pretty well.
Conversely, an old dude who lived across the street from me got angry at some of my guy friends who flew up and down the street. Made the grave error of jumping out in the street in front of one of the crazier guys as he was ripping back up the street from the cul-de-sac. The boy drove up into dude's yard to get around him. Tore up the yard, could have killed the old guy's dog (or wife) if she had been out there. Trouble ensued -- talking to my parents, the boys parents, etc. Didnt stop the speeding, however, and the old guy's front yard bushes mysteriously died shortly thereafter.
So there are several ways, effective and ineffective, to go about dealing with it.

Time for about 5 lbs of sugar in someone gas tank at that point.

bullshite. If I'm driving legally and a kid pops out from behind a parked car and I hit him bacause there is no way I could avoid it, I am at no fault. I have no legal obligation to assume anything about anyone. I follow laws, I just have to assume everyone else does. If there is an accident, but I was following all laws, I am not in any way at fault.

You are correct. But this only strengthens the arguement that people shouldn't let their children play in the street. They aren't smart/experienced enough for that responsibility.
I'm not trying to be all anti kids playing, and I do think drivers act like idiots and make things more dangerous. But, I have on several occasions been driving very safely, and had moments that would scare the crap out of me if I was the parent of the child. I just cannot see letting my kids play on the street. In college, I was hit by a car doing less than 35 mph and it put me in the hospital overnight. It could have easily killed me. I hate the idea of pedestrians and cars. I just don't see the need to play near the street even if the speed limits are low.

You keep saying this. Where did you ride your bike as a kid??? Only in your yard??

I know in your head you sound like a billy bad arse tight now. But to everyone else you just sound like an immature punk. Basically what you're saying is it's your damn road, kids better watch out, and if you just happen to run over some 5 year old girl chasing her ball, then it's her own stupid fault. You've got places to go and people to see.
