Get ready to go somewhere and call him up as you are leaving and tell him you are coming pick him up, you have something you want him to see and he can't say no to this.
Take to a strip club, just have a guys night out. When depressed sometimes the first step is just getting out. Removing yourself from your comfort zone.

If he's depressed and jobless the last thing he needs to be doing is going to a titty bar

You read the op and thought going to a strip club on a whim is the thing to do.

My neighbor was similar to your friend except he seemed more upbeat at times. I invited him to walk about the neighborhood with me and my dog and he accepted. We walk every day now and it helps both of us especially since we have some common interests that we can blab about.

If he’s into rugby, try challenging him to a one on one match. Basically I think this would be like a two man smear the queer game.

Just continue to check in but don’t be pushy. As someone utterly destroyed by depression, I appreciate when people show they care but trying to offer solutions when I’ve tried everything just becomes overwhelming.

I concur. Just show up and say let's go. Get him in the sunlight which helps depression.

As someone who has been on that side of things, my advice is to insist on spending time with him.
After I lost my father I did the same. Quit working, except on the family property and isolated myself.
Fortunately I had several friends who would t take no for an answer.
