About 50k. Which is what they make now. Take their 180 days of work at only 6 hours, and it comes out to around $36 an hour.

Pretty damn good to have every federal holiday, 3 months off for summer, and the best retirement in the state and free insurance. Better than about 80% of the jobs this state offers.

I'm no advocate for teachers but this is very unintelligent because it's just so misinformed that it makes me have the sads.

Um, I'm a public school teacher who coaches 2 sports and with nearly 20 years experience it costs me $1000/month for my insurance. I also will have to get a second job after retirement because unlike you I don't get the benefit of social security. I will only be able to get about 60% of my highest 3 year average salary, which will likely be under $4K a month (and thats with a masters degree). So, before you speak out of your arse, maybe aske someone who knows better first

Couldnt you work a couple of years longer to bump up that 60%? You dont have to retire. Your average rate would then increase as well. Win win.

I'd pay twice as much in property taxes for better teacher salaries as long as they hired at least 50% men.

As a teacher, I’d be 100% ok with this.

It's a part time job, that for the vast overwhelming majority of them is an easy gig. If it were hard, women wouldn't do it and as far as public servants go and their worth to society. School teachers are down there with cops.

As a teacher, I know that a visual is often helpful.

I'm a history teacher and I'd do it for my salary I'm making now. Teaching can vary wildly by grade, subject, district, and state. In PA there is no state testing for history, so I get to teach how I want and spend as much or little time as I please on any area of my course. Yeah student discipline has gotten worse, but I wouldn't say it is out of control in my district. I've always noticed that the teachers that have big problems with discipline are the ones that get anal about every little thing and have no interest in getting to know the kids. A little bit of self awareness and some time getting to know them goes a long way to running a more efficient classroom. It certainly doesn't solve all of the problems, don't get me wrong, but it certainly helps. Dealing with parents is kind of an art. You have to figure out how to deal with them individually and as situations arise. If you're considered a pushover, parents will run wild on you. If you pick unnecessary battles with kids over trivial crap, parents will come at you left and right. If parents know you'll stand your ground, but you're reasonable with them you will usually have a lot fewer issues.

I do feel bad for the teachers who have overbearing admins and aren't free to teach how they want. I know I'm in a fortunate situation, for now. We're replacing a lot of our admin team after this year due to retirements and some things may change for the worse, but I guess we'll see.

You are very fortunate. Testing has been out of control for quite some time.

I agree. I’m generally well-liked by my students (there are always exceptions), but my classroom management is very good, so I don’t have many discipline problems inside my classroom. If the kids believe that you genuinely care about them, you’re 90% of the way there.

54k ÷ 180 days ÷ 8 hours = $37.50

Is that not fair for great insurance and a lifetime pay check after 20 years?
