Financially, you are correct in your example.
My thought process at the time was someone taking a 30 year note on almost a million dollars means they don't need a house that expensive.
With the rates as low as they are now, you can argue that it's almost free money. While true, I don't like that amount of debt (even if covered) but that's just me. My finance guy would like me to think more like you.
