I was a poor and dishonest kid from Zachary with not much going on in my life. This was something awesome I could do on my own with approvals from my friends (who also did it).

I'm from Central but didn't grow up poor. I was raised like a Lannister, a man always pays his debts.

When I bought my first house I got a bill from the sheriff the first year for like $1500 (property taxes). I thought to myself, oh shite, I don't want to owe the sheriff money so I paid it.

I had to dip into savings but I paid it. They sent it back to me about a month later. I didn't know what escrow was at 27

Yep. Nothing like opening the mailbox and finding out you owe $20+ for an Ugly Kid Joe album.

I did it at least three times before I was 15, and my brother did a couple of rounds. I would eventually forget to send the monthly card back and get a selection of the month. Never paid for any of it. Had friends who did the same.

I’ve never known anyone who actually fulfilled their contract by purchasing albums at the regular price. No wonder the company filed bankruptcy.

"People would fill out a real address with fake names and get 12 free CDs," he said. "The punch line to this joke is that everybody who worked at Columbia House had done this too [earlier in life]. It really was like an inside joke."

For another NPR music denizen, Stephen Thompson, Columbia House also represented more than mere music.

"For generations of people, Columbia House was a huge rite of passage — your first foray into maybe wrecking your credit rating, or at least running afoul of an authority beyond your hometown. I was never a member myself, because my parents filled my head with horror stories, but I always look back on Columbia House as, like, Baby's First Mail Fraud," he said.

Actually I’m laughing because I’m at a loss and your intellect is simply blinding.

Now I’m laughing at you and your limited intellect because you think it’s cool to defend some anonymous dope that brags on the internet about stealing things.

Sorry ma’am, I’m just not witty like you.

So, tell me something lady, since you think I have a mullet just because I have a script A next to my name, do judge by hair color too? Do you make fun of your blonde friends or wish you had red hair?

A man of age, yes but we had fun getting those 12 cassettes before having to 'pay the piper'.

Good times, but it was worth every penny back in those days, no regrets !

Did you do anything to try and make up for your actions, or did you just write it off to poor upbringing or can you now, without conscious, cast it aside, because your anger towards me calling you out is greater than the guilt you never really felt for your actions?

beerJeep sounds like a slutty, country chick, maybe she wishes she had a few more selling points.

I have no clue, it’s why I asked.

I held up my end of the deal. I waited for a Buy 1 Get 2 (or 3) free offer. By the end I had around 30 CDs and it was still a fraction of the normal cost.

Can’t say I’ve put much thought into paying back a company with a business model was as greedy as Columbia House.

You’re not nearly important enough to bring out anger in me. As far as guilt goes, I’ve never felt a bit of guilt about scamming a scammer. Especially as a pre-teen. Have a great night!
