How many cases do detectives work on at once?

I been watching a bunch of tv shows and was wondering how many cases the detectives work on at once.
In real life do detectives only work on one case at a time? That being said.. there must be hundreds if not thousands of crimes that need to be solved. How do detectives diversify the time?

Seems you have lead detectives and those that assist them. Pretty sure most work multiple cases at a time.

Guys in Homicide last year in Baton Rouge handled around 20-25 cases a piece, not counting suicides and overdoses. That's not the norm, their load should be lower than 10 if staffing were adequate.
Or, you know, it could be lower if Baton Rouge weren't killing each other at a record pace.

Tough to work a ton of cases when you've got an alcohol problem and both an ex-wife and by-the-book captain on your arse all of the fricking time.

I wanted to be homicide detective. Not for brpd but like sfpd

I can only speak for for BRPD homicide. Last year I was primary on 16 homicides and secondary on another 17. Then there were about 6-7 non fatal shootings I handled and maybe another 30ish death investigations (suicide, accidental, OD, etc).
The FBI says that one person shouldn’t be primary on more than about 6 homicides in a year.
I know of at least one in homicide who’s had 10 homicides so far this year (as of last week).
The BRPD administration knows this info because I relayed this to them on my exit interview. They won’t staff them appropriately, but they won’t staff other divisions as well.

How hard is it to be a police detective from a uniform? And what's a day like working for brpd?

I went straight to homicide from patrol. That was my goal from the start so while in patrol, I focused on following up on cases when I could, report writing, and making good arrests. It was a pretty big transition just because of the different kinds of warrants and in depth investigation that was done, but it didn’t take long to catch on.
I actually didn’t mind day-to-day because of my co workers and I loved working murders. Eventually the bullshite with the city and administration go to the point that it wasn’t worth it for me anymore, so I got out earlier this year.

I’m definitely darker
Tons to do out here.
The geography is gorgeous.
The woman are beautiful.
Bonus: it’s not Baton Rouge
From what I’ve heard, not much has changed over there

Ebrso are always in sunnier disposition than brpd . I worked in city offices as clerk.

I've thought about applying to brpd. Would be weird since I've been arrested. I'd prefer k9, narcotics , and homicide. Definitely couldn't do uniform forever . Or traffic

Yea there have been a handful of BRPD people transition to EBRSO over the last few years.

Don’t do it. Working for that department isn’t worth it. At all. If you want to get into law enforcement, go EBRSO or somewhere out of state.
There are some good people within BRPD but the pay is abysmal and don’t expect any support whatsoever from the administration.

Im all ears. I know working for city parish sucks. Only a handful of departments are well run and funded. Federal law enforcement is hard to get into . State troopers, hell no. People say I'm too sissy to be a cop , all I know is from tv and movies. But I can imagine
dea seems interesting.

The feds aren’t a bad option, but yes it’s highly competitive. And it’s nothing like tv and movies. I enjoyed my time in it, and I miss the work, but I don’t miss the department or the city. You just have to do what’s best for you. Don’t listen to what others think about you.
