With all of the advanced tech we have available, we are still looking around at planets saying "That one may have water on it".

We are a long way from a functional plan that can implemented.

I'd say 500 years is plausible.

Compare 1918 to today, now assume that same exponential growth for another 500 years and I don't think that's far fetched.

The real question is can we sustain our own species and planet long enough to see that growth?

And "self sustaining population on another planet?" doesn't mean we turn Mars into Earth. It could simply be a small population of people in a relatively large compound that sustain themselves.

Elon Musk will have nothing to do with it, I know that much.

I think a lot of it has to do with motivation. Getting to Mars and colonizing it would be an extremely large and expensive undertaking - and for what? Why colonize Mars? I mean, I CAN walk five miles to the grocery store but that doesn’t mean I want to or am going to. I’m going to drive. Similarly, why spend an obscene amount of money to live on a barren and inhospitable planet when you have all this good shite on Earth?

But let’s say we found out that Earth would become uninhabitable in 50 years and everyone and all our descendants will die if we don’t colonize Mars. Could we do it then? I dunno but we would be more motivated.

There isn't a reason to. At best, we could only duplicate conditions on earth. Realty is we that won't happen. Lets just stop destroying earth. Nature made us the perfect space cacoon.

Eh, there are a lot of things we have today that would have seemed impossible 500 years ago.

Sure

But if we could figure out how to terraform another fricking planet it might stand to reason that we could figure out a way to make things suitable enough here to where we wouldn't have to or want to

If we climb a mountain too fast we get fluid in our lungs and can die, if we dive too deep in water we get the bends which can also lead to death, if we stay out in the sun for half a day, we can get severely sunburned.

We have to abide by a very strict lifestyle here on this planet, the chances of us surviving on another planet are pretty much zero unless we evolve bigtime as a species.

Honestly, and I hate to say this, never.

Human life will have become extinct by then. Too much opposition to science and spending funds to do it.

It makes me sad but unless humans have somehow managed to end up on other planets, we will die on this planet and that will be that.

What if, instead of interplanetary travel and colonization, we first learn to travel and colonize inter-dimensionally?

Never. We're over due for an asteroid impact or super volcano to set us back.

After listening to Musk on Rogan, I truly believe he is robot AI he is going to to get us there way sooner than previously thought.

They have to rely on others for the most basic need - water

At this rate we are too fricking sensitive and worried about offending people to ever do this.

Colonizing a planet is going to be back breaking hard as frick work, we’re breeding pussies now, they couldn’t colonize the quad.
