NEW ORLEANS — The outcry for change across the U.S. has manifested in New Orleans into renewed calls for the removal of President Andrew Jackson's statue in Jackson Square. In recent years, New Orleans has taken steps to remove symbols of the Confederate-era. In 2017, under former Mayor Mitch Landrieu, four confederate monuments were taken down across the city amid heated protests that drew national attention.

"If people were to think of Jews from the Holocaust, there's not a Jewish grandmother out there that allow a statue of Hitler to be in front of her grandchildren on a day-to-day basis - or have a school to be named after any of his allies, or any of the streets named after them. Because symbols matter," one member said.

Lmao Jesus Christ

Andrew Jackson never rebelled against his government and he’s one of my favorite Presidents because he truly despised the international bankers with all his heart. He fought in duels and he threatened to hang John C Calhoun from the tallest tree in South Carolina if Calhoun tried to break up the Union. I’m sincerely asking the far left to please leave President/General Jackson alone man.

Not going to happen they will appease them with Jeff Davis, Robert E Lee, and other confederate streets. Not to mention the statue is a historic landmark that gives it certain protections. The Jackson statue will not be the first statue of a former president to be taken down.

I have supreme faith in the retardation of the residents and leaders of that city. They'll get it done.

I hope they rename it Che Guevara Soviet Square. Then say the cathedral is problematic to the memory of Che so they can move in on that as well.

He owned slaves. The statue's days are numbered. They don't give a shite that he basically defended the city from the British and ended the War of 1812.

The big fence around it and the police. It worked fine all of last week.

Now if the city decides that it needs to go, nobody can stop it from happening.

Exactly. There are images all over the news/social media of bozo's toppling statues without any repercussions whatsoever. Why would the Jackson statue in NOLA be any different. It's basically a terrorist situation. The mob says either you (government) take it down if you want to somehow preserve it. OR, we'll blatantly commit a crime and come tear it down because you aren't going to stop us or punish us.

They should make them pay for the cost of removal and rehoming. Suggest and replacement (approved by a unanimous vote) and fund the replacement.

So make them go raise a few million. It won’t happen.

I love how people naively think their favorite historical figure is safe despite supporting the destruction of others

That statue is getting removed and the square will be renamed. Get used to it.

When I think New Orleans that particular statue is one of the first things that comes to mind.

Would be a shame, a damn shame.

President Jackson saved the USA from England. Treaty be damned, if the British had control of New Orleans we would only be half the size we are now.

Plus he was a bad arse being shot multiple times and overcoming illnesses that killed weaker men.

Yeah, let's never mind that Andrew Jackson successfully defended New Orleans from the British with some ~2000 less troops. Idiots
