The battery starts the car, the alternator keeps it running. If the alternator is not providing adequate voltage to recharge the battery while running, then the vehicle is forced to run on whatever voltage is available (read: your battery). It will use up whatever voltage is available in your battery and then your car will die. While not under load your battery will recharge a tiny amount but likely not enough to provide adequate cranking amps to restart the car.
To make this easy, you very likely won't make it to Wednesday. And as another poster said, instead of just replacing an alternator, you'll also be replacing a battery with dead cells.

Get it fixed before it kills your battery for good. But that doesn't take long most of the time. I just went through this last week.

should be fine as long as you only drive downhill

Alternators are cheap. If you have any mechanical skills at all, you can DIY and save even more.

Depends on where it's located but it should only take 30 minutes with a few tools.
Borrow the tool (from where you get the alternator) that helps you push up the pulley making it a piece of cake to put the serpentine belt on.
I've cshngef several over the years and it's not hard .

I am doing it myself. I just can't get to it till Wed. And it's not because I'm poor it's that I'm super fricking busy this week

When you get an alternator, get a good one. Those cheap ones with the one year warranty guaranty you will be changing it again quickly. I bought one of those shite alternators once and it was bad before I ever installed it.

I use to have to change out some alternators when I was young and was always having a high powered stereo system.

This is pretty dang generous too. I think I did one on avolkswagon diesel that seemed like it was machine pressed into place and it didn't take this long.

This. If you get one at auto zone you'll be replacing it again in a year. Pony up and get one from a dealership or at least OEM from wherever.

Well since you're so super busy and money isn't an issue then drop it off and have a fricking mechanic fix it.

Should I also replace the belt too?
Posted on 8/21/17 at 12:22 am to TigersHuskers
No belt isn't necessary, and like other posters said it only takes an hour or two. Unless you work 24 hrs a day you have time to fix it. Do it in the parking lot of oreillys on your way into work in the morning.

Just recently changed mine and I can tell you that you can't drive very far before the car dies on you

When your alternator fails, your battery will not charge and discharge supporting the electrical devices in your car.
If your alternator is on top, it'll take less than an hour, closer to half an hour to change it.
You may want to change your belt if it's old.
