A snyonym for wisdom is insight. If you're able to make insights from knowledge that you're taught or from experiences you incur, you're wise. If not then you're just a trivia expert.

Wise and intelligent people from past generations used to say don't memorize what you can look up.

Unfortunately (in this context) we can look up literally everything, so many don't memorize or learn anything. The old adage has become severely inefficient.

There is opportunity: status of one's birth, technology at hand, money you start with, talent born with.

Then there is the more-important other half of the equation: what you do with it.

Wisdom, in this context, is knowing this and getting up and making something of yourself, regardless of your original opportunity. That comes with observation and time.

I disagree. Wisdom is knowing what to look up when, where, how and why.

this except...
you don't need knowledge to gain wisdom from experience, in my opinion.
i've learned more from my failures than my successes.

success comes easy to me when i want it to.
i also don't necessarily agree with what we define as 'failing' or 'succeeding.'

We are born with IQ
We gain knowledge as we study and learn
Experience is a natural part of living

Wisdom begins to surface when we start applying the above to real life situations and we understand the danger of employing only emotion or natural inclinations

Wisdom grows when we begin to respect the viewpoints of others and understand that life is not fair. Wisdom is reflected when we respect that much of what we achieve in life is do the influence others have had on us.

1) Intelligence
2) Age
3) Failure
4) Self Reflection

Those 4 are required. I would never say that Richard Nixon was ever wise since he was completely incapable of self reflection.

I disagree whole heartedly with this. Littlefinger in Game of Thrones has lots of knowledge and experience, and might be the most intelligent character in the series, but he is not wise. I would not call people like Henry Kissinger wise.

i'm going to pretend you didn't just try to compare real life to a book series turned tv show where there are dragons, magical children who live under trees, and spirits that are summoned to kill brothers.

Knowledgeable means you know facts.

Intelligent means you can figure out patterns and problems.

Wise means you have seen this shite before, either through direct experience or observation, and have a good idea of how it will work out in the end.

It's just an example that is thoroughly dissected that many posters are familiar with in why experience and intelligence doesn't make one wise. I can give you plenty of real life examples:

Richard Nixon
Henry Kissinger
Bill and Hillary Clinton
Harvey Weinstein
Mao Zedong
Joseph Stalin
Saddam Hussein

I consider all of these people to be exceptionally intelligent and most with severe failures, but they are completely incapable of self reflection, allowing them to do atrocious things without a single frick given. These people are not wise.
