How great are nurse practitioners?

Rather than waiting weeks for an appointment and hours in the office for a medication I could basically prescribe myself, I can see an NP at a moment notice without a wait.
I wouldn't trust an NP with complicated diagnoses, but they are great for routine stuff.
I know there is a pretty big debate on here about the subject, but I support my local NPs. Thank you for keeping healthcare costs reasonable and for the convenience.

You need a new primary care provider. With One Medical, I've never had to wait more than a couple of days for an appointment and never more than 5 minutes in the office.

NPs are great. I think the argument is scope of practice - when they try to overextend their training to make more money and potentially put patients at risk.
There are no short cuts in medical education. The volume is tremendous. It's why it takes on average 7-8 years of post-graduate training to become a physician.

They are great, when they know their place.

This.
And that goes for nurses too. Do what the damn doctor says and not what you think is the right thing.

When I have a cold? fricking awesome.
When I have cancer? Not so much.

Most are great. Some are scary.
ETA: Which I can probably say the same for physicians, nurses, therapists, and dentists.

My wife had severe nausea and stomach issues and could barely eat for nearly 2 months as she jumped from doctor to doctor getting wrong diagnoses. Finally it was a nurse practitioner who ordered the correct tests and diagnosed her condition. Changed my view on nurse practitioners in a big way.

I go to one as my regular routine medical person. She is better than some physicians I've had. Been with her about 10-11 yrs. I trust her judgment.

They are great. Work side by side with the doctors. It's family practice for crying out loud. I'm sure the sniffles will be fine. IF it's serious then you will go see the specialist anyhow
