I know, right?

Had offers here and New Orleans, along with interviews in houston. This job has a lot more responsibility and affords me an opportunity to learn a lot really quickly. I'd rather be in NO, but this job is better

LSU is a great school if you want to work in engineering in Louisiana or Texas.

However, it is not that great if you want to go elsewhere. If your kid can get scholarships, Georgia Tech, MIT, Vanderbilt, Stanford, ect all have far superior engineering programs if one wants to practice engineering out of state. LSU and A&M are clearly the best options for staying in the Gulf Coast, though.

It's really not about where you go to school to a certain degree but about how well you perform once you are there.

THIS

Big name schools open more doors but in the end if you can't perform that becomes obvious.

That's cool. I am doing an internship right now in BR and love working for this company, but I kind of want to move to Lafayette. Need to start looking for a job over there or get comfortable with the idea of a commute

Unless his ambition is to stay in TX/LA for the rest of his life, MIT is by far a better option for long-term success than LSU. MIT has world-renowned professors and its name carries weight in the engineering world far beyond anything LSU can offer. Not sure why this is up for debate.

I say the above with full knowledge that if he applies himself at LSU, the sky's the limit. Good luck to him regardless.

I don't think this thread was ever meant to compare LSU to MIT

Besides one ding dong in this thread, there is no comparing the two (unless you want to talk sports )

Yeah, I think we've all jumped the gun saying the kid should turn down his full paid MIT scholarship to go to LSU .

If you can go to a good school and it's financially possible then DO IT. 100% no doubt about it. But don't get all that upset if you end up in a situation where you have to go to LSU. You can learn just as much, you just have to push yourself and you won't be surrounded by the same intelligence level. Make good grades and don't be a super wierdo and you'll have an oppurtunity at those 6 figure careers. And that's all that really matters.

Lafayette is a great place. The traffic sucks, but it's nothing compared to BR. Better nightlife, better food, less crime, better schools, ect. I tried to find a job there, but I had to settle for one in BR, and that makes me a sad banana.

Yeah, I'm set on moving there. The thing is finding a job I love as much as the one I have now in BR. I am thinking I might commute from laffy to br.

If you look at the top 5% of LSU, it will compare with the top 5% of pretty much anywhere. If your son is going to be in that top 5%, he'll be fine.
There are two differences between LSU and other major engineering programs:
1) Cost
2) The other 95%

The bottom 15% at Carnegie Mellon, MIT, and the like are probably more highly regarded than bottom 15% from your major universities, but he very likely still wouldn't have a problem. Send him where it's cheap (LSU) and tell him to make the most of his education. It's a solid investment. And if he rises to the top there, he's as hire-able as anyone.

Shoot for the stars. MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, etc.

frick that. LSU is more than adequate, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. If he applies and gets accepted to one of the schools mentioned here, you will more than likely be paying for a ridiculously overpriced education.

MIT uses needs-based financial aid. If your kid can get in, they will ensure you can afford it.

At MIT you're inevitably going to take out a ridiculous amount of loans. Thus, taking the value away from your education.

This isn't true.

Direct from MIT's financial aid page: LINK

We meet the first $6,000 through a loan/work offer (also called “self-help”).
If your need is greater than $6,000, we award you an MIT scholarship from one of the funds we administer.

LSU Engineering is middle tier at best in the country. I think the only reason it's highly regarded is because it's the only Engineering program in the state. If Tulane had Petro Engineering, They would be number one.
