If you don't mind driving about 60 miles to spend $650 on a rebuilt one in Columbia.

I did fail to mention, that my rebuild took months as well, only because it was a project car, and when I first hooked it up the OD didn't work, so I had to pull the valve body and redo it.

Though rebuilding a LSD rear is almost as hard.

Changing a clutch in a manual is easy, changing a throwout bearing in a manual is easy.
rebuilding a tranny is the hardest mechanical job there is, but it can be done. With time and patience.

I only took so long because I didn't need the truck. It drove great after I was all done though.

an AX15 is a manual. manuals are so much easier to rebuild than automatics. For one you only have one clutch disk, not 20-25.
You don't have bands, you don't have compressed springs with hundreds of pounds of force held in place by snap rings.

I think any shade tree could tackle a manual. Automatics are a beast.

It's a worthy challenge to try but it's not fun like rebuilding an engine or doing a head job.

for a lift you simply need a $69 harbor freight jack and a $50 transmission adapter.

You jack the vehicle up as high as possible the lower the transmission on the jack. Much easier than a lift without a transmission lift.

Not sure if it helps but I bought one from Brian Harris Chevrolet for 1525 dollars with a 100k mile warranty. It was cheaper than I could get one rebuilt and it came from Chevrolet.

Yea a manual doesn't require much special tools at all. An automatic required model-specific tooling to install pistons, spring packs, and shaft seals just for starters. It's a tough meticulous job and mechanical aptitude can't make up for not having the right tools. The tools tend to cost more than s rebuilt transmission.
