Just buy a rebuilt one. Not worth the effort. They are like $1500

This seems to be the thing to do these day, just buy a rebuilt one and install it. Ebay is your friend.

I wouldn't have done it if I needed that truck. I figured I'd give it a go since I could be fine without it for about 9 months.

It's not easy. I definitely could have done it if I had the tools, but I didn't. They're ultra expensive. It's not worth it.

Perfect post showing why someone that doesn't know what they are doing or talking about should not even attempt. Nobody "loses" a throw out bearing when rebuilding an automatic transmission because they don't have throw out bearings. Only manual transmission equipped cars do and its a part of the clutch mechanism not the transmission. Its also about the size of a doughnut. I swear that people (all the damn time on this board) make up stories just so they can post something and end looking like fools. Don't know anything about the OPs topic? Easy , just don't post in thread!

Link to where I said it was an automatic transmission?

I swear some people lack the basic fundamentals when it comes to reading comprehension. OP title was "How easy/hard is is to rebuild a transmission" not an automatic.

But I bet you thought you got me with a sick burn huh baw.

fricking idiot I bet you feel good about your self because you think you are an authority on trannies

be careful with ebay. I bought a rebuilt TH350 years ago for a jeep I had. It came in and appeared to be rebuilt. I installed it and it would not shift after about 100 miles on it. When I called the guy who I bought it from, he tried to blame everything on me but agreed to rebuild but I had to pay shipping both ways. Problem with that is it would have cost several hundred dollars of shipping back and fourth. I ended up pulling it and having a local shop rebuild it. Once they rebuilt it again, I worked like a charm for years after,

The bigger point was "losing a throw out bearing". Not a transmission part. Clutch part. And it's not likely to be lost. It's not a small part. You could be telling the truth. I don't know you. I don't believe your story but who am I? Sorry for hurting your feelings on a message board.

If my dad was rebuilding the transmission don't you think it makes since to change out the clutch? You don't have to answer that Tranny.

It was about 5 months from the day I pulled it out to the day i was driving it again. It's fricking pain in the arse. I'm glad I did it now ealooking back because I learned a whole lot, but I'll never do it again on something I actually need to have back in a reasonable time. By the time I replaced the stuff I screwed up, I saved no money.

It's tough. I'm by no means an expert mechanic or anything, but I'm pretty good at working on pumps and compressors and stuff. If you don't have the tools or are not very talented mechanically, you ain't doing it yourself.

If it's not a vehicle you really need than go ahead and try. It's a good experience if you have a bunch of time and aren't too concerned about getting off as cheap as possible. You will screw up some parts and have to replace shite, and it will take a while.

If you want to save money, pull it and install it yourself. Either pay someone to rebuild or buy a rebuilt one from a reputable shop.

We pulled out the AX15 in my wrangler back in high school. Did all we could then had to take it somewhere to get a couple of parts and put back together. It was about 3 weeks total downtime, just working on it after school until dark a few days a week. And this was with a guy who was a helicopter mechanic at an army base who knew his way around the tools and parts. He said if they would allow him to take it to the base, he could have had it taken apart and back together in an afternoon, but that was generally frowned upon. Still we saved a good bit of money doing as much as we could. Had we known the engine was going to crap out in a year we wouldn't have bothered. The previous owner wasn't too fond of oil changes apparently.

If his dad was like mine, he probably threw that fricker in a fit of blackedout rage.

In college I removed a transmission from my Nissan truck on a lift on an Air Force base and it was a PITA, took it to a transmission shop, and they rebuilt what was needed, and I put it back on the lift. Replaced the throw out bearing (yes clutch part) and possibly some other stuff I can't remember. I can't remember how exactly we did it, but you basically have to have the vehicle lifted completely and then need some specialized lift also for the transmission as you can't just hold that MFer up there unless maybe you had 4 guys. My dad and I had to jerry rig the heck out of something to help us and we had a 3rd guy give us a hand. Putting it back on was a royal PITA.

Anyway, I had a lift and it cost me about $550 for the transmission/ clutch work and then like $200 to use the lift. Everyone quoted me like $1800 for the work to do it themselves.

You need multiple specialized tools really for the transmission: presses, lifts, etc. Its really not worth anyone's time that doesn't know what they are doing, and I really don't every say that.
