I had a professor try to teach us about that last semester. I still have no fricking clue what any of it means.

One, i had no idea he worked for google now. Last book i read was spiritual machines some time ago. I've just been watching the shite come true and it's petty impressive.

Two, it's pretty easy to criticize when someone's making predictions on shite he cant possibly have data on. By its very nature, future tech is unknowable.

I'm optimistic about it. Honestly drunk at the moment, but optimistic. I'll probably be cynical and hungover tomorrow at work, 'we'll kill each other before we ever reach that level' will be a likely post from me tomorrow morning.

How does the OT feel about all of this?

AI is not going to be a real thing until quantum computing is developed.

we are so far away from true "thinking machines" that the singularity is laughable at this point. raw computing power is really just a number of calculations per second and doesn't produce any real independent thought, and our best AI are still just reading commands from a list of programmed inputs/outputs. sure some of them are sophisticated but they are a far cry from "strong AI".

Dude I just tripped balls after reading my post, thought I was in the matrix until I noticed the one year mark. I remember this thread like it was a year ago!

nick bostrom is my go to go on any futuristic discussion. He's on point, read some of his papers and tell me what you think. I read several of them back in college

Maybe, but...

You gotta admit this is a little scary.

We're really not, we should have the human brain reverse-engineered soon. Once the mechanics are understood it shouldn't be implausible to recreate it then improve it right?

Human DNA has been mapped since the 90's. I don't see human clones anywhere yet...

The raw computing power will eventually get there.

Quantum computing is on the horizon and will be the next stage in our current "Information Revolution"

But the technology is not only feasible but inevitable. There's already debate on the morality of it not because it's fun but because it's going to be a reality soon.

Or we could merge with them and keep up.

The thing is, what is the point of keeping separate conciousness at this point? Ie why should you, I, my wife stick around as separate entities?

Once humans merge and lose their biological components, why continue with multiple machine/man intelligences?

Seems like at that point the "intelligent" thing to do is get rid of competing influences. You don't need other "minds" for progress, just more hardware for calculations.
