Not oil field, steel foundry. I haven't been in the oil field since 2014's market collapse. What I truly want to go into is petro engineering. But with a family right now, going back to school for that isn't the right time currently. My job wants me to go into process engineering, but I pretty much hate my company right now. They pay me well, and it could possibly just be the dept that I'm in, but as of right now I loathe my job.
Plus I'm only 24, and the things I was passionate about when I started school I'm not that passionate about anymore. I really am just all over the place right now

by lsu480 Don't you have a felony conviction? Good luck.....
This actually deserves a conversation.
Why shouldn't someone who made a mistake and did their penance deserve a second chance?
And why shouldn't the state be the first to offer the opportunity to change their life around?
Not just police, but firefighters, mailmen, etc.

Shoot a dog. They deputize you on the spot.

Well considering police officers carry guns and once you are a convicted felon you can no longer legally carry a gun.......

Well, to be fair, if it was for a non-violent drug felony, I can't see a valid reason not to.
And the best way to rehabilitate someone is to make them a functioning member of society.

Literally not be qualified to do anything else but have a strong belief that you are capable of anything.

Not trying to be funny, honestly want to know what becoming an officer of the law entails. Is there a certain degree you have to have or is it just High school diploma/GED. I know you have to get accepted into the academy and graduate from it. Cops of the OT, help me out. Thinking about a career change.
I would try getting hired by a small town police dept. A HS diploma/GED should be sufficient. Our daughter started with the small town police dept and moved her way up to bigger things. They paid for her training and to attend the police academy in BR. There was a good bit of studying and physical fitness involved as well as having to have good marksmanship. Oh and she also had to get tazed!!
But the money isn't great starting out.
To the O/T - she has not killed any dogs but has rescued hundreds of them along with horses and other assorted animals. She has never fired her weapon on the job or been accused of excessive force. Nor does she have any issues with black people or any other ethnicity.

You should probably edit that last paragraph out

It's kinda like joining a gang. You have to get initiated by attacking an unarmed minority. In New Orleans preferably in the 7th ward.

Why is that? It is simply an example that she is known for being a good officer who doesn't discriminate and is on the side of who is right, regardless of ethnicity. She is not viewed by anyone in our community as an enemy simply by being a cop.

With an expunged felony no government agency will hire you. Although it's not technically on your record, it's still on your record.
Local pay isn't great, state pay is a lot better. Federal pay is often a pay cut from the private sector. LSP actually just got an additional pay raise this week, they're starting at 46k now before optional OT and details. You could easily clear 70 a a year. And don't forget about the pension after 20 yrs.

Weren't you running a crew making the big bucks recently?

Low paying? Maybe in LA but most jobs are low paying there. Cops in Minnesota make 45-60k there first year. Many after year 5 make 70-90k. Officers who are topped out make 100k easily without much overtime

First, you have to be an alpha douche bag. Then...that's about it, actually
Posted on 7/18/15 at 3:07 pm to 7thWardTiger
On a serious note, if you got tired of your other careers in that short of time you'll probably get tired of this one even quicker. Cops have to deal with a lot of bullshite and the pay is not anything to write home about
