I know 4 vets including my cousin.
3 of the 4 are males. The 1 female is a lesbian from Canada that works at a 24/7 clinic.

How did veterinary medicine come to be a female-dominated profession?
It happened when every city person started pouring money into little useless dogs and cats instead of just knocking them in the head when they got sick. Real veterinarians were men and had to deal with horses and cows. You won't see many women stick their arms into a cows pussy to turn the calf into the right position for birth or up a bulls arse to straighten out his shite gut so he can blow mud.

You can come watch my wife inseminate and ultrasound mares or castrate studs. Then we'll talk.

You know it.
Usually after regular office hours. Horses are funny about when they decide to colic.
But anyone who ever owned a horse knows that truth

This has been an entertaining thread but I don't really have an answer for the OP.
My class was ~65% female.

With very few baby boomer vets retiring, the number of new clinics popping up all over the place and get school enrolment numbers increasing every year, opening a single owner practice is financial suicide unless your are in a tremendous market in a metro area and work 60+ hours a week.
In short, millennials don't have a chance. And I called this shite back in '07-'08 because I saw it coming.
The sad thing is, it is only going to get worse because no one is telling these kid's,"hey, the vet field is oversaturated like crazy and only going to get worse, unless you got a boat load of money and can afford it... Try another field", but no... they will be the next line of struggling lawyers
Most everything here is spot on.

It's like asking why chicks graduate with better GPAs than guys do...probably a shite ton of reasons.
This...I dicked around first year at LSU and got a few Bs and was basically told it would be very hard to get in with anything under a 4.0.

Medicine is the same. Both will soon be vast majority female. In many parts of the world, it already is.

My daughter wants to be a Vet and so far she is making the grades and has a job at one of the franchise vet clinics. I have told how hard it is going be but she is determined.

If she works on 165, I see her way too often.

I'm sure the sample set you used to compile your statistics is gigantic.
My daughters class only had 4 guys out of 58. I was kind of shock.
