Song is mocking the South. So it's fine because it's mocking white southerners. Which is always okay in the media's book

It kind of mocks everybody. Btw, that album has some of the best songwriting of all time and it really is a kind of gothic ode to Louisiana and the South. I mean, nobody wrote that way about Huey P and that whole era of Louisiana, either before or since. It’s on my list of essential albums.
Who built the highway to Baton Rouge?
Who put up the hospital and built you schools?
Who looks after shite-kickers like you?
The Kingfish do
Who gave a party at the Roosevelt Hotel?
And invited the whole north half of the state down there for free
The people in the city
Had their eyes bugging out
Cause everyone of you
Looked just like me
Kingfish, Kingfish
Everybody sing
Kingfish, Kingfish
Every man a king
Who took on the Standard Oil men
And whipped their arse
Just like he promised he'd do?
Ain't no Standard Oil men gonna run this state
Gonna be run by little folks like me and you
Kingfish, Kingfish
Friend of the working man
Kingfish, Kingfish
The Kingfish gonna save this land

The song is obviously written as satire with Newman writing from a song character's perspective.
He didn't get in trouble for the same reason DiCaprio didn't get in trouble for the things he said in Django Unchained. It isn't really hard to figure out social satire and fake characters from real life.

A) it was written a long time ago.
B) It isnt part of modern pop culture so SJWs dont know about it
C) It's a satirical song that is poking fun at the South but also skewering Northern hypocrisy, esp when he blasts the defacto segregation in Northern cities.

Yes he's free to be put in a cage
In Harlem in New York City
And he's free to be put in a cage
On the South Side of Chicago
And the West Side
And he's free to be put in a cage
In Hough in Cleveland
And he's free to be put in a cage
In East St. Louis
And he's free to be put in a cage
In Fillmore in San Francisco
And he's free to be put in a cage
In Roxbury in Boston
They're gatherin' 'em up from miles around
Keepin' the n*****s down

You're going to be surprised when you find out why this isn't true.

Yeah, it would become an uproar today, even though the lyrics are pretty anti-racist. What's interesting is that the point Newman was trying to make is still relevant today; northerners are, for the most part, way more segregated than those of us in the South. Yet we are often seen as the racist ones.
As a side note, Good Ol' Boys is a great album. Rednecks is a great song. As are Louisiana 1927 (Youtube) and Kingfish (Youtube).

Yeah these days he would be crucified and have death threats. Different days in different times.

I realize that it is satire and love the album but blatantly saying the n word in a song would cause Lena Dunham to have a heart attach
