I always chuckle at the overtones about this combination, too, but to fully answer your question, it is because MLK in Northport runs into the city limits of Tuscaloosa, which names the road Watermelon Road.
Tuscaloosa's MLK Road is in the ghetto on the west side of town.

Because it was given to streets that had high black populations at the time. Those areas rarely improved that much.

Yeah austin, mlk is by UT, really nice area. Though I remember when I lived in Austin (early 80's) you may not see but one or two black people a day. In round rock I saw none. I move to kenner and half my childhood friends were black.
