Where in Bham are you going? 459 won't be bad northbound, as most of the traffic is leaving the city. Avoid downtown if possible

Northbound on I-20 and onto 459 won't be bad. But the 459/280 junction will be a motherfricker

I don't think you'll run into this, but the worst traffic in the city is on I-65 south between 459 and Chelsea. I don't know how it's possible for that many people to live out there, but the traffic is god awful from ~4pm-~630pm.

Take 20/59 to 459. Get off at exit 17 on Acton road. Turn right into acton. At Cahaba River road (there will be a Gentry Pharmacy on the corner) take a right. When you get close to Target and Chick-Fil-A get in one of the left turn lanes onto 280. You'll bypass the whole 280 exit and a mile or two of 280 this way. Grandview is down a little ways on the right. Assuming you're staying in the hotel there.
Edit. Just forgot you can turn in the back entrance of the new grandview hospital and go straight to the light across 280 into grandview parkway.

Never had any problems in T-town with rush hour traffic on the interstate. Bham - traffic congested, but can usually get through okay (assuming no wrecks).

They were doing interstate construction through there a couple of weeks ago.....

I work at 459/Acton. They've been doing construction on Acton going toward Altadena for the last couple of weeks. Not sure how passable it will be. It might be fine today?
Unfortunately for the OP, he's totally fricked. You couldn't pick a worse place to try to be in Bham at 5-6PM.

I thought it was opened back up? I drove that way a few weeks ago and saw the construction signs. Something about pipe work near the old golf course. Some friends said it was opened back up but not sure if they had to go back and do more road work.

Avoid 280 like the plague.
Going into the city on 280 is no big deal in the afternoon.
20/59 sucks at rush hour going both ways. Go 59 to 459 then 280.

Pretty bad in Bham. Where are you headed from and to when going through Bham?

Make sure you hit up Hattie B's Hot Chicken for dinner. It is real close to your location, right off 280 behind the hospital.

Um Hattie B's is nowhere close to Grandview Park Way. It is in lakeview.
FTR, Eugene's hot chicken food truck is 10x better.

I guess you're right if 7 miles is nowhere close.
