“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Some of you are in dire need of some Jesus. Even if you are athiest, you hate on the church like they are Planed Parenthood. That says more about your character than the people going to places like HPC that actually do good in the community. Do good worldwide actually

10% huh....Where did you get that number from?

Tithe. That's the word for 10%. It's in the Bible. Similar to the verse that says "God loves a cheerful giver."

Perhaps I did a poor job explaining my position, that happens when you typing from a phone while you do other things.

I am not an atheist; Far from it, I am someone who has seen churches destroy the reputation of the religion they profess to teach. I have attended many churches in my lifetime and watched pastors commit adultery, steal from their congregation, lead people to believe false doctrine, and at the same time watch friends and family defend them and rebuke anyone for calling them out. It's sad that this is what has happened. Therefore, I am a verify first kind of guy when it comes to churches, especially when they seemed to be hyper-focused on obtaining money from their parishioners. And asking church members to use a credit card to give (that is giving what you don't have) is hyper-focused on obtaining money.

The scripture you sighted I have no issue with, it is what I believe the Bible instructs. The Bible also instructs what is to be done with the money as well. I think we can all agree the Bible instructs us to give to the poor enough that you would expect a LARGE percentage of the church’s funds would be going to that. Let’s look at the church in question.

Per their financial report $15,759,355 was given to the church. How much was given to the poor? It’s hard to tell because this isn’t a financial report, it’s a fancy brochure. It looks like $357,678 was used in disaster relief and $689,762 was spent on local benevolence (I assume that is giving aid to people). So, it’s possible they spent a little more than a million helping the poor. I'm not saying they are bad people, I am sure the place is full of good hearted people doing what they believe God has put on their heart to do; however, I doubt many realize that the church saved considerably more money than it gave to the poor. Or that they spent considerably more money on buildings than it gave to the poor, or that it spent considerable more money on day to day operations than it gave to the poor. The point is many of these place are focused on getting money rather than giving aid as as instructed in the Bible. I'm not picking on this church exclusively because I don't think is anything unusual, this is how most churches operate.

What does concern me about this church in particular is their sketchy financial report. What are they really spending all that money on, there are no details.

Yea, they don't care. There's no doubt the biblical model for the tithe does not fit well with the modern mega-church. But "giving" your gifts; time, talent or money, is still very much a spiritual discipline with merit. HPC is just a part of much bigger evangelical culture that tries to hard to play nice, fill the seats and seems content with Sunday only Christianity. Filled with good people, doing good things. But the true cost of discipleship is far greater than the comfortable and manufactured environment so common in churches all over this country.
