My cousin got 4-5 inches in his entire house. He is fully insured homeowners and flood. What steps should he take and what should he expect? Any advice is appreciated.

Call insurance company IMMEDIATELY to report it and make the claim. Ask them SPECIFICALLY more than once what they want you to do. Follow their directions to the letter. Some will tell you to call Servpro immediately to schedule them to come out and "mitigate". Some will not. Do what they tell you and make a record of everything so you can prove an attempt to mitigate the situation. You have an obligation to try to limit damage if you know of a situation. If you make the claim right away, record everything and follow their instructions to a tee, it'll make sure the insurance company can't come back and say that you caused extra damage that they'll refuse to pay.

Your house will likely need to be remediated just as if it were a flood. Replace walls, floors, all furniture, mold remediation when the walls and floors are done. Cabinets and counters will likely need to be replaced. Appliances will likely need to be replaced. You will be homeless for several months while the repairs are being done.

This happened to me with a water heater and the insurance company ended up stroking a total of $150k worth of checks, including five months of hotel rooms.

Those floods were before the draining of Spanish Lake. They haven't had a flood since the lake was drained. I now live in Denham Springs and when the big rains came a few years ago, my house and the guy across the street were the only two whose houses didn't flood. The water came up close to the door but it didn't come in the house. I was really worried that I would have to go through that crap again. Thankfully I didn't get water in my house but living in Denham, you're always prone to a flood.

Talk to your CPA about taking a casualty loss on your house.

Insurance adjuster came out and approved removal of 18" of sheetrock hut when we got into the walls the insulation was wet farther up so we took out the lower 4 feet of wall throughout the house

It was the adjuster’s first flood or he was an a-hole- 4ft cut is standard for NFIP as long as you can document a water line- Leave one little section of drywall or door trim that has a good visible water line for the adjuster to document-

The only issue with mitigation companies is they will charge $40k for a 15k job- and if the mitigation can’t jusstify it NFIP is only going to pay the $15j

Dorothy, you must really want details of my simple little life.

Louisiana is where i reside. The professional term is subrogate. That is what they call it when one company is “reimbursed” by another.

As a matter of fact, my neighbors company called me to claim no responsibility originally. I thought it was inappropriate, but took the call. Told them that she should look at her computer, and see the claim that had been made 4 years ago when a 12” Dia. Branch from this same tree took out a corner of the roof.

Yes, the same guy that cut the branch off of my house 4 years ago is the same guy that cut the entire tree off of my house this time. He is also an arborist. I told her that she had 7 days in which to talk to him, and find out his opinion of the tree. Otherwise, they would receive a letter from my attorney. Yes, I had an attorney lined up already. I also had pictures of the inside of the tree which that company had in their possession already. It plainly showed that this tree was NOT healthy.

Well, in the next week, they called to accept responsibility. Go figure. I will go back to my original message to the OP.....ask questions, and do not be afraid to fight.
