Anyone ever use a software program to design a house? Any recommendations on which one is the best? Looking for something that will be pretty detailed and give us a good understanding of what outside and inside of house will look like.

Possibilities are unlimited, it comes with a lifetime free trial period, and there are no buffering issues.

Chief Architect has some consumer options that would allow you get to a point that you can bring the design to someone that can actually convert it to construction documents.

Would need Civil3D. Doubt he wants to spend $2K on software.

Google Sketchup is cheaper and easier option.

Yeah I don’t mind spending a couple hundred bucks, but want to avoid spending too much if I can.

I haven't used some of the other products mentioned but this would be hard to beat. I've used it multiple times and it's extremely easy. The amount of visual detail you can apply is also pretty endless.

For what?

Revit is the Autodesk building design software for what he’s looking to do, but it has a lot steeper learning curve than Sketchup or Chief Architect.

Unless I’m missing something, this is almost $2k to buy. I am hoping to not have to spend that much if possible.

He suggested CAD. Not Map 3D. If you're gonna buy 3D might as well go with Civil and get an application to handle terrains and volumes better. JMO. Either way, overkill in this scenario.

Agreed on the learning curve, which is why I suggested Sketchup. I'm not familiar with Chief Architect or Imagination, I'm sure those may be better suited for what he wants, but not sure their price tags are worth it just for visualization.

That has nothing to do with this. That’s remodeling a house...this is new construction. I want to compare different floor plans and 1 vs 2-story houses and having a software program to help would be a lot easier than trying to grasp the layout from a 1-line or sketch from an architect.

I hope you aren’t in a hurry. There is a decent learning curve with any software you use. And you are going to need a draftsman or architect to convert your drawing to construction docs anyway.
