We found out today that my dad( also my best friend) is going to be getting Hospice care. He's 83( I'm 49) and has had lung cancer for several years and it has gotten worse over the past couple years. Have any of you had any experience with Hospice around the Hammond area?he lives is Pumpkin Center. Also anything I should look for from these companies....my dad is one of the nicest men you could ever meet and would give the shirt off his back if you needed it.I know the end is getting near but damn this hurts....what do you do when your hero is leaving you?....Tia

Tell him everything you'd want him to know. Spend time with him. Take pictures. One of my biggest regrets is not having enough pictures with my mom. You never realize a picture's value, until pictures are all you have left.

damn, man...your post just put a lump in my throat. unfortunately, that is the very situation that a majority of us have to deal with at some point in life...we are just in denial that it will ever happen to us or one that we love.

you and your dad will be in my prayers tonight....

Very sorry to hear about your dad. My dad passed away in the Richard Murphy hospice house 6 years ago. It is a quality organization. Not always easy to get a room there because it is an actual house reserved for the terminally ill. I would definitely check into it if I were you. We had no complaints.

Give me a few to check with someone familiar with hospice. I'll post back for you.

What do you do when your hero is leaving you?

Grieve,

Rejoice knowing you will be together again one day,

Honor his legacy as you fashion your own

Rejoice that you were blessed to have such a wonderful man as your father

Audubon Hospice out of Baton Rouge. They have staff in the Hammond area. Recommended by a friend who owns a Home Health/Hospice consulting company. You can call and speak to the consultant if you would like. Julianne at Haydel Consulting, Baton Rouge. My best to you.

If he's staying in his home, Community Care Hospice & Heart of Hospice.

If you need in-patient care.

Baton Rouge - Clarity Hospice. And The Carpenter House
New Orleans - has several

Also Medicare covers hospice care.

Spend as much time as possible with him. If he is still able to talk, record his voice. I recently lost my dad, and I'd give anything to hear his voice again.

I know a good one there but I'll have to check with them first. I'm not sure about the cost but I don't think money is an issue here.

My girlfriend is an administrator for LHC group in New Orleans. There is an LHC Group in Hammond as well. They primarily do hospice at the patients home. If there is something that can't be managed at home they have inpatient facilities that the patient can be transferred to. Good luck man. I know this is an unbelievably difficult time for you and your family. Prayers sent.

My mom is going through bad times right now also. She is in a hospital on the northshore. We are discussing inpatient hospice tomorrow. I will post some places after that for you to look into.

Sorry to hear what your dad and yourself are going through. I can't offer much other than thoughts and prayers and echo the sentiments others have provided.
