Chicago Tribune/Courier News Article
So, instead of taking free money to get a good job and start earning at 19 years old, they'll blow through Community College on straight C's and be unqualified for anything this side of a Wendy's drive through.. all while paying off student loans.
A Chicago Suburb to Baton Rouge translation key is provided below:
Dundee Crown High School - McKinley High School
Elgin Community College - BRCC
Carpentersville - Scotlandville

When the Dundee Township Rotary Club put out word they had scholarship money available for students planning to pursue vocational careers, they expected they'd receive at least a few applications. What they didn't expect was they'd receive none.
quote:
The club's scholarship fund received a boost last year when a private donor partnered with the organization to offer $10,000 in funding to create several scholarships. The pool of available money is $30,000.
quote:
Glees, who is also a coach for the Dundee-Crown High School INCubator program, said she recently spoke to students in the Carpentersville school's woodworking and automotive classes about the scholarships.
quote:
"A lot of the kids I've talked to are college bound in as far as they're going to Elgin Community College for two years because somebody has told them the only way to get a good job is to get a college education,"
quote:
Carpentersville resident Jeff Frost, who works in construction and is president of Laborers' International Union of North America Local 582, said his industry has seen a noticeable decline in young adults seeking work.

But there aren't enough opportunities for them to go to college and further their education.

The everyone needs to go to college lie is fricking this country.
I've already tried to talk to my 5th grader about this. We'll certainly support him going to college (as long as he doesn't choose some dumbass major), but we'd also be very supportive of him going to trade school to learn to weld, be an electrician, plumber etc. Those jobs can very well lead to great salaries and potentially starting your own business.

On the one hand, that seems stupid.
On the other hand, if you ever want a career beyond a trade, you won't get shite without a diploma. That's just the way the world works now, right or wrong.

Learning a trade will get you a hell of a lot farther in life than a shitty associates degree in general studies.

Sadly this has been preached to often and is so far from the truth.
There is nothing wrong with hard work. This board is an example of people judging someone for not having a masters degree or someone living a life that doesn’t keep up with the Jone’s. Perfect example is the douche making a joke out of people who live in a trailer.

Most won't get a diploma.

Very much incorrect sir. There are loads of good non-trade jobs out there being occupied by young people out of trade school.
And almost any trade is a guaranteed good living, especially if you're willing to travel while young and hustle. People dont do trade school because they're fricking lazy and too good to do anything manual.
