Damn.....I was just riding my motorcycle through that intersection a few years ago. Lucky it wasn’t me.
I went to L'auberge a few weeks ago, this really hits close to home (I am assuming that's on nicholson right?)

What kinda cut rate insurance do you have? I ride and my life insurance would pay. How do I know? I read the policy before I bought it.

Don’t pay him any attention. He’s just a douchebag, try-hard trying to be cute.

Hi, I'm hear to buy a life insurance policy.
Ok, sounds good. So do you drive a motorcycle?
Yup.
Ok, just so you know, while we do charge you a premium for this life insurance policy, it doesn't actually pay out anything if you die.
Gothca, where do I sign?

This is also not true.
shite, if humans had great reflexes, the guy that just died in California would have quickly grabbed the wheel after two audible and one tactile alerts.

this is my whole point; he WASNT able to react in time because the robot had lulled him into a false sense of security.
why doesn't anyone get this

Human isn't able to react in five seconds, and you're using that as proof that human reflexes are better than automation. Got it.
Fact is, the vast majority of accidents are caused by distracted driving, drunk driving, etc. Automation will cut that to a fraction of what it currently is.
Hell, just having the automatic braking standard will prevent thousands of accidents and deaths (that's an example of automation).

None of these things really has anything to do with riding a motorcycle in traffic.

you misunderstand.
i'm 100% in favor of driver-****ASSISTED***** technology such as airbags, blind-spot alerts, auto-braking, etc etc etc.
however
as soon as you tell the driver the car can handle the driving, you lose them. i don't care how much tesla protests & says the driver could have 'woken back up' in time, the fact is psychology studies will tell you once you no longer are the primary stakeholder (autopilot got cha covered) then they stop paying attention.
this is the tipping point.
eta and arguing about distracted drivers on cellphones, etc is a strawman argument. we're talking about vast majority of drivers who process billions of tiny data context clues to paint a picture of the environment around them no robot ever will.
for instance i move around until i'm behind a small car in traffic so i can observe brakes lights 2.3..even 4 cars ahead. i often brake before the car in front of me does because i'm watching whats going on down the road..and i suspect i'm not the only one who does this either. half the time the idiot in front of me brakes at the last minute and then i'm not forced to stomp on my brakes at the last minute just because he did. the cars behind me appreciate this too.
i also throw my hazards on if there is a dramatic slowdown ahead of me as an extra warning to people behind me.
i've pulled out of traffic and onto the shoulder before in these situations because i'm looking in my rearview mirror and making a judgement call the guy behind me isn't going to stop in time.
no robot will ever be able to put all that together.
impossible.
i'm sorry you believe humans are shitty drivers as a whole because of dumb fricks in baton rouge that wreck daily on the MS river bridge but i'm not one of them and from my 51 year old view, plenty of other people are as aware as i am.

Everything you've just outlined cars already do or will soon do.
For example:
quote:
This world's first system warns the driver of risks that may be obscured from the driver's forward field of vision. It can not only sense the relative velocity and distance of a vehicle directly ahead, but also of a vehicle travelling in front of the preceding one.[*] Like other INFINITI technologies such as Forward Emergency Braking it can help provide a more confident driving experience.

ELLLL
OOOOOOOH

no robot car is going to get out from behind a big truck and move into a spot behind a prius so it can 'see' 3-4 cars ahead.
keep on drinking that robot car koolaid friend.
