This is Bs. more and more "experts" are starting to recommend it more especially for boys - see gender gap growing in colleges and professional schools
We held my son back in K and it was a night and day difference and he's really old for his class but I don't give a shite

then hold him back in 1st or 2nd grade. think long term not single point in time. he will fall further behind maturity wise just an fyi
ETA; my point being every kid and situation is different. You have to do what you feel is right with input from the teachers, administrators etc

True Story. I failed third grade.
My teacher said that I couldn't read at a level for fourth grade. I lived in Rural North Louisiana. My Dad visited the School Principal to discuss the situation. The Principal agreed to advance me to fourth grade, on probation for two six wk periods. If I couldn't stay up with class, I would have to go back to third grade.
That summer I checked books off the Book Mobile and read all ssmmer. I developed a strong interest in reading. My Senior year, a classmate and I, tied for the best reading comprehension in my High School. It was a small HS.
Twelve years later my oldest son was five years old. I found a first grade Primer school book and taught him to read. Two years later I taught my youngest son to read.
A couple years later a fellow employee who was an Elementary school teacher, told me that kids aren't mature enough to read until they reach seven years old. I disagreed and told him my experience. He got kinda huffy and told me he was a professional, and I had no business arguing with him. Said I did not have the education or knowledge, so he would excuse me.
I learned, don't listen to educated fools. Spend time with your kids and teach them and give them an opportunity to advance. Life is too short to waste a year.

ut aside of his struggles, he has still managed to keep his head barely above water grade-wise.
Do not equate grades with intelligence. It certainly will not hurt him to repeat a grade, but remember, learning is not a continuous path, it ebbs and flows.
Big question, is he bored in class? Some kids get board with the repetition of first grade and their struggles is not that they do not get the concept, but are just bored. And I am not suggesting ADHD type situation, just first grade is a lot of behavioral, rote memorization type stuff with writing letters, etc...
One way to tell, look at something he is struggling with and get him out of the class context to talk about it. Have him explain what he understands to you and your wife without the pressure of the teacher or test around. Try not to make it seem like you are quizzing him.
Also, another trick is positive reinforcement. Kids sometimes think because they are not getting something they are dumb. You have to dispel your kid of that notion, he is not dumb, everyone learns at a different pace.
Finally, just remember, ebbs and flows in learning, we do not all develop in our learning at the same rate, off pace from the average is not slow, it may be normal for him. People get concept at different rates for different concepts. A person may pick up on math quickly, but struggle with sentence structure.

Gross over statement.

Surprised i have not read this in the thread. Do most schools not have Pre-First? I went to an elementary school on the northshore (im late 20s) and there was one Pre-First class between K and 1st. We had 4 Kindergarten classes, 1 Pre-First class, and 4 1st grade classes.
Seemed totally normal. Pre First kids were "cool": knew some upper classmen, better at sports
Sometimes random kids would skip kindergarten and start in pre first, but rare
