The new trend is that 5&6 kids are in coach pitch now.

right but in 5/6 they still get the tee if they dont hit after 7 pitches.

thats how it was done, I guess they may have changed that too

Same here, 5 and under is a tee, 6 is coaches pitch

Our league is putting 5 year olds in coach pitch. I held my daughter back though and we're doing t ball.

What I've seen is the 5 & 6 year old kids who never get to play tball are not learning good swing mechanics. All they learn is to make contact with the ball. That's all well and good at this level but it hurts the kid down the road at the 9&10 and 11&12 levels when their poor underdeveloped swing fundamentals means all their hits are little slow rollers to the shortstop.

They did that last year at our park but they've dropped even that. Our 5&6 kids (unless their parent held them back as we did our little girl) are strictly coach pitch.

It is paid for by the Tournament. My son played 3 years of travel ball at Majors level, and is close to starting as a freshman this year. If a kid gets with a good program, it will make him a better player. He will face competition much better than any league ball.

I wish they'd not changed it. My suggestion to the board was that all 5 & 6 year olds should be evaluated like we do the older players. But instead of this evaluation being for draft purposes, it should be to determine if the kid would benefit more from tball or coach pitch. I know we've got some ready for coach pitch and for them that's fine. But most of them need that year of tball.

The closes t I've even seen was a ball that stuck in the chain link fence on the tball field back when my son was in tball years ago. I'm trying to remember which of the kids hit it but I'm drawing a blank.

As for the coach pitch level (which plays on a little bit bigger field, I can't remember ever seeing a kid hit one over there. Seen plenty go to the fence but not over.

I saw two at Cypress Mounds for coach pitch over the last couple years..
You seem obsessed with them hitting it out. It is cool to see but can be bad for the kids to focus on hitting for the fences

You think I seem obsessed, that's cool.

I didn't like baseball growing up. I don't have much to teach. I play catch and all that, but I let coaches coach.

You probably think I'm helicopter dad, when the opposite is actually true. I am entertained by watching the kids have fun.

I was curious when to expect homers. What's the big deal?

Damn good point. The kid should be focused on nothing but a good swing. Just as golf is all about how you wing and not how hard you swing, the same is true for baseball. Yes, you want a good quick bat with good speed, but it's far more about proper swing fundamentals than anything.

I'll tell y'all a shitty story...

My son was 12 years old & hit one out the park at one of those fields by the new bridge. Was his first homer. The kid floated around the bases. I was in tears and everyone else cheering him on....

The opposing teams coach appealed saying he didn't touch first base. The definition of a dick, if I could have jumped the fence I would have.

Total dick move on his part. Sadly I see crap like that quite often.

I didnt mean it in a bad way, seem like a dad wanting to see it, which is very cool. When it happens not only does the kid freak out but so does everyone there.. fun moment

One of life's tough lessons

When people spend that kind of money they want to win & lose sight of what's it's all about. My son blew it off & as you can see I'm still pissed!

That's where a coach has to teach the kid. Next to making sure the kid is safe and having fun, it's the biggest responsibility of a youth coach. My goal has always been that when a kid moves on to the next level I want to have made his love of the game grow and equipped him to be as successful as his talents will allow him to be.
