What kind of plane is this and why is it painted this way? Nation?

Bonus: What significant event happened concerning this type of plane in 1943?

That's a Japanese Mitsubishi G4M Betty bomber.

Isoroku Yamamoto was killed when his Betty was shot down by P-38s down in 1943.

That paint job is what they wore post-surrender. The cross was green.

That is a Japanese Mitsubishi G4M Betty Bomber. It's painted that way because of the fact it was carrying the Japanese delegation to the surrender.

A group of American P-38 Lightnings ambushed and shot down one of these. On board this aircraft was the commander of the Japanese Combined Fleet, Admiral Yamamoto.

I should know this, but I do not.


That is Horatio Nelson. He was a British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars. His most famous feat was the defeat of the French at the Battle of Trafalgar. He died winning that battle.
