I know why he's important but I'm not sure what's significant about his tombstone.

I've got a good one I'm gonna post at lunch time when I get to a computer. Will probably be child's play for you guys though.

Because his wife's mentioned something about compassion and justice, yet unfulfilled.
So, when they relocated him from his unmarked grave (what cowards like Slovik deserved) - said "Honor and Justice Prevailed" - cryptic - I don't know if they mean that it was honor and justice that put him in the ground or honor and justice that relocated his remains to be next to his wife's remains.
In any event, he got what he deserved - although he was the first deserter executed since the Civil War.

For lurkers that might want the rest of the story:
Private Slovik was fighting in France and deserted after coming under fire. He was returned to his unit but his CO refused his request to transfer to the rear lines. Slovik deserted again.
And this is where he really F'ed up. After the second desertion, he wrote down a confession on paper and handed into to commanders on the rear lines. He was asked several times to tear up the paper and return to duty, but he refused. Before being court martial-ed, he was offered the chance to join a new unit with a clean slate, he again refused.
He believed that the court martial would just involve jail time. That was not the case, and he was sentenced to execution.
quote:
Major General Norman Cota. "Given the situation as I knew it in November, 1944, I thought it was my duty to this country to approve that sentence. If I hadn’t approved it—if I had let Slovik accomplish his purpose—I don’t know how I could have gone up to the line and looked a good soldier in the face."
The sentence was also reviewed by Eisenhower and upheld. Death by firing squad - the last of its kind.

So we're going to do this now?
It was USNS Hughes Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193).
Now it is the GSF Explorer.
The internet obviously still works, GT, the OT is on the internet.
