French paratroopers at Dien Bien Phu.

At first I thought those were American but if you look you'll see a French MAS-36 rifle that gives it away.

Let's crank this bad boy back up.

Who is this?

Bonus: What unit did he belong to at this time and what is significant from a historic standpoint about that unit?

I don't know who it is then. But is that the unit of American volunteers that flew for the French?

That's Herman Goering. In late WWI he commanded Jagdgeschwader 1 which was nicknamed the "Flying Circus" due to the colorful paint schemes of it aircraft. The historic significance of this unit was twofold, (1) it was one of the most successful air units of the war on either side and (2) it was commanded by Manfred von Richthofen (The famed Red Baron) before he was killed in action.

No that was the Lafayette Escadrille.

Can't tell you the name of it, but it appears to be a German giant mortar or heavy artillery piece - but the barrel appears to be too short. Also, is that a flak Panzer next to it? Or maybe a supply vehicle using a Panzer body?

Correct

That's because it's a mortar. The picture above is one of 5 giant siege mortars the Germans built during WWI. They were known as Karl-Gerat. They were the largest self propelled weapons deployed in the war.

That's actually the support crane that had to stay with it to help load the massive projectile it fired.
