This quick clip of Jordan Peterson is pretty spot on. The context of the conversation is that he's being forced to use all types of stupid gender pronouns and he says he's refusing to. Not really part of the history point, but just so you're not lost.

Had never seen that before, nor heard of Jordan Peterson.

I completely agree.

Anyone who would downvote your post is arrogantly living in a fantasy-land where the present is always perfect, and it's those backwards neanderthals who lived 1000 years ago...or 500 years ago...or 250 years ago...or 100 years ago...or 50 years ago who were just too unenlightened to realize what they were doing was wrong.

Highly recommend watching, or listening, to his appearances on Joe Rogan's podcast.

You could easily provide context and an opportunity to learn instead of simply saying he was evil and needs to be eradicated from public purview. Ive studied Lee throughout my life and he is an admirable commander who put his love of State and his troops before the easy choice of being the Norths commander. The way this whole movement has gone down is troubling and reminiscent of the fascist hysteria these clowns proclaim to stand against.

Ive always felt that a solution could be reached without simply tearing down pieces of art and history. Instead, any objection is shouted down with cries of racism.

No. Of course not. If anything, it underscores its importance, and why there needs to be a balance in the curriculum.

Look at how emotional everyone is getting over this one issue, nationwide, for a whole week now. Obviously, people care about history. On TD, there are history topics in the forum every single day, without fail. We are always talking about it, we are always going back to it to help shape our perceptions and opinions. Why on earth would we drop it as a subject?

All that I've seen in the past week convinces me that we need better education in history at all levels of schooling. Since the incident last weekend, I have seen many people on both sides of the issue pushing poor interpretations of history, with most of them failing to actually realize what history is, and what it isn't. Now's not the time to dial it back on history in schools.

I'm confused. I thought we were worried they were scrubbing the history books prior to 1965, but you're saying they're being too real?

No, I'm saying that these kids aren't capable of understanding the complexities of history. So when you feed them nothing but negative aspects of our country then they grow up to hate everything about the nation. Yes, teaching them that everything is Thanksgiving dinner and chopping down cherry trees isn't the whole story, but the avenue these SJWs want to pursue is detrimental in the long run. They need to be eased into the more complex views of history, but it's much more productive to ease them in with a positive attitude towards the nation.

I agree. I don't support the statues coming down, but I think the arguments in their defense are often lazy. I also think the arguments for taking them down are lazy. I basically believe it should be a local issue to do with as they please.

Gotcha. I tend to agree. I think they need to learn about it all, as long as the time is appropriate. I don't support scrubbing the history books in the slightest, but I also don't equate statue removal with scrubbing the history books.

Ah yes, the man who's made a career of using 10,000 words where 3 will do. If you really want some frustration in your life, check him out on Sam Harris' podcast.

have several textbooks at home from the 1950's...and older...I often have my teenage boys read those when they are studying something from American history in particular...to get another perspective from their teacher generated chrome book slideshow presentation

I'm curious what a 1950s history textbook would say that is revised in modern history books. Any examples?

I'm not sure if I necessarily agree or disagree with that but I definitely believe it's the first first sign of a new direction in how historical figures will be sieved through 21st century morality, which is a very bad thing.

To me, it bothers me that they treat the statues as "evil" in a one dimensional interpretation.

I think people are putting too much value on a statue.

I've heard some of their back and forths.

Their discussions on the intersection of science/philosophy/truth are beyond my knowledge of those subjects so I got a little lost. I'm sure he's not quite on the same level as Sam, but I enjoy listening to him.

I know you like listening to Sam Harris because you get to brag about it at fundraisers for endangered species.

I understand that type of sentiment, but there is part of me that thinks morality is one of those things that shouldn't change throughout history. At the very least, being on the wrong side of history when things started to change should be a knock against someone, IMO.

Regardless, the Civil War should be taught with as little political slant as possible. All of American history should be taught that way.

It also helps to score overweight unshaved poon.

It's an interesting back and forth because Sam uses philosophy to try and find a bedrock of truth, where Peterson uses symbolism to suck his own dick.

biggest thing I have noticed is that their little cutesy pootsy slide show presentations that are simply meant to prepare them for a test at the end of every year so the school can continue to receive Federal funding...severely lack any depth of the issues that for example...led up to all of our wars prior to 1950.

hitting a few highpoints about the Civil War..ie...muh slavery, muh Ft. sumter...muh Lincoln savior of humanity..muh Southerners were inbred racist bieces of shite...does not really clearly indicate the issues of the time that had been going on for damn near 50 years prior to 1861

or here is another...

February is Black History Month...got it...cool...no problems...discuss those heroes of the civil rights era and those African-Americans who greatly contributed to the success of this nation..but my 6th grader did civil rights for basically all of the spring semester...they glossed over WWI, the Depression, and WWII and then spent months on the civil rights movement, The War on Poverty, and the Feminist movement...making very little mention of the fricking COLD WAR that was ever present through all of those years....

there is no in depth analysis of where we came from and who we are and why America is fricking badass and the greatest nation on the planet...just what all was wrong with us and who the brave souls were that fought against all this so called internal tyranny and what all needed to be "fixed"

...basically the ideology of the left in a nutshell

oh and there are no history books, or science books...its all Google this and Google that and slide shows and what not...even their Math text books have been taken away

like I said....they build the slide shows to get them ready for the standardized tests at the end of the school year..thats it.

But when it comes to social shite and how academia works, Peterson has some insightful shite to say. He just can't say it in less than a novel and periodically breaks to smell his own farts.

I think it's absolutely essential. It's important to contextualize the prevailing behaviors and beliefs or we can turn everyone into a raging monster. Hell, we have people now saying that math and milk are racist. Using that type of hypersensitivity to judge someone who had to be "brutal" out of necessity to survive isn't honest.

Enlightening take

Always nice when you can use "philosophy" and "suck his own dick" in the same sentence
