The average American simply can't imagine losing as many men as France lost in either World War.

Listen to Hard Core History’s “Countdown to Armageddon” podcast.
Prior to WWI the French were some of the baddest arse soldiers the world ever saw. They were fierce and smart militarily.
But WWI, and the advent of new weapon technology like the machine gun changed everything. Thousands of men died every day. For weeks and months at a time. Every day, mowed down like fish in a barrel. An entire generation of fighting men were slaughtered.
When WWII came along those that survived remembered.
I can’t say that I blame them knowing what I know after listening to the horrid description of what war in the trenches was like.
