re: Historians - how did the people who were staunch believers in Hitler's ideology react?

Most were just sheep who followed orders. After WW2 they just held their heads down and cleaned up Hitler’s mess and rebuilt.

Rudolf Hoss, Nazi commandant of Auschwitz, wrote in his diary of his life while waiting to be hung, that he still believed that Hitler was right about the Jews & that he would do it all over again. The ordinary Germans knew full well what was happening to the Jews, especially from 1942 on. Look at all the videos of the crowds of Germans reacting hysterically when Hitler passed by in motorcade after motorcade. A lot of the pictures of the Holocaust in all its evil came from pictures sent back home from the East by German soldiers & SS. Their families knew. Where did all those tons & tons of used clothing, sent back to Germany for dispersal to the German population, come from?

Well, the average German definitely, at the least, knew that Jews were being subjected to some very draconian measures from violence to formal legislation. Above that it appears hard to say what the average German citizen knew.

The Nazis rounded up people of various backgrounds, not just Jews although they were predominant. Because of the laws many Jews were fleeing the country, so did the family down the street leave or were taken away? And of course the basis of the Jews being taken away was also disguised.
