The initial investigation by State Police revealed the crash occurred as a 2014 Freightliner truck was parked blocking the northbound lane of LA Hwy 563 for DOTD workers to replace a road sign. A DOTD worker, 50-year-old Johnny Cole of West Monroe, was standing behind the Freightliner. 42-year-old Michael Moore of Ruston was traveling north on LA Hwy 563 in a 2019 International Harvester 18-wheeler and did not notice the DOTD truck stopped in the northbound lane of travel. Moore was unable to stop and struck Cole, then struck the Freightliner in the rear.

Cole was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lincoln Parish Coroner’s Office. Moore was not injured in the crash and was cited for careless operation. A toxicology sample was obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Frick man. Prayers to his family.

I almost hit one of these guys the other morning on a two lane road. Had there been a car in the other lane as I was passing, I would have had to come to a complete stop to avoid him. He stepped out into the road to place a cone just before I passed him and I had to move into the other lane to avoid him.

The side of the highway is always dangerous, even with the best of precautions.

There is supposed to be a crash truck behind any stopped or slow moving work vehicles occupying a lane on highways. Absolutely no one is supposed to be behind the crash truck.
