I don't have an addictive personality so I think I could try heroin and not get addicted. But I don't like opiates, don't like needles, and would be afraid of overdosing and dying so there's no reason I would ever try it

In all seriousness, this is part of the same cycle that happened in the seventies. Heroin was always around, but for a number of reasons it got popular outside the underclass. It peaked in the early seventies, then the reality of how bad it was reached a critical mass and it fell quickly out of favor. By the early eighties it was back isolated on the wrong side of the tracks again. It took ~30 years, but all those lessons have been forgotten, and a new generation will have to learn them over again.

white college aged kid from the suburbs ODing on heroin is much bigger news than somebody in the projects, which generally isn't even in the news.

I bet if heroin was a white cop, you'd hear about it.

Shooting up once and getting addicted is more myth than anything else. For the most part drugs are misunderstood by most. Heroin by itself is relatively safe. It's all the bullshite that goes along with it that causes problems. Sharing needles, poor quality drugs, and combining it with other drugs (booze) that creates dangerous situations.

Pure heroin overdoses are quite rare, even among firs time users. Heroin related deaths almost always involve other drugs, usually alcohol.

Heroin isn't some boogieman lurking in the shadows. It's been around for ever. It's no more or less available now than it has been in the past.

And on top of that, it's far more potent that what has been available in the past.

This is the main problem here in Bham. The stuff they are getting is too strong. Sad stuff.

Yeah, it and other pain killers were big at LSU a decade ago when I was there. It never appealed to me, but I unfortunately know a good number of people who got messed up on it. Some came out of it, but others did not.

The pharmaceutical pain meds are responsible for this. Opiates are more addictive than Coke, Crack, Alchohol, or anything else out there.

Because so many young college students are prescribed opiates for back pain and what not? How about a little personal responsibility.

Kind of like blaming crack addition on the the high prices of covaine and adderall.

There was a pack attached to my LSU pennant that I received as a Christmas present. If it was not intentional, then I would say yes!
