I find it interesting how people like Washington are forever immortalized as old men. He first rose to prominence as a war hero in his early 20’s, then spent the next 20 years of his life as an influential and successful businessman, landowner, and politician.
He was barely 40 when he was a delegate to the First Continental Congress before being appointed Commander of the Continental Army. He was wasn’t yet 50 when the war ended.
There were several portraits of Washington conducted throughout his life, but the most famous one was done just a couple of years before he died. So, he is remembered only as an old man by subsequent generations.
