About 30 minutes ago my heater started blowing cold air. It had been on all night working just fine. I just turned it off.

Anyone know what's going on?

It's electric

I guess it's not much of a heater then.

Gas or electric?

If gas, the pilot prob went out. In my old house I had a problem once with the valve that controls the ignition of the pilot light.

If electric, try resetting the breaker.

Check your batteries in the thermostat first.

Check your breaker. Worst case, heating element went out.

I would have expected this answer from a 12 year-old.

Alt Answer: Good, the battery on the heater is fully charged.

turn the unit off. reset breaker(if tripped) adjust thermostat to a low temp. turn unit to heat. slowly increase temp until thermostat engages the heating elements. if still cold you have a bad element

It's just recirculating air in the house. heating coil is not working.

]Most likely on same circuit as the blower so not likely to help, which obviously it didn't.

If this is accurate, sounds like something shorted in element, causing to trip breaker and causing an "open". There is probably another breaker/overload that tripped in the heater unit. Look at owner's manual to see what other "safety" features are on the unit. May be something that has to just be reset or may be something simple to replace.

I have a gas furnace so not as familiar with electric furnace.

I had different breakers and similar issue. Breaker inside house and one on wall outside by fan. Go see if fan is running when heat comes on. Check if there's a breaker out there for fan.

It's probably just in a defrost mode. They recirculate inside air from time to time to keep unit from freezing up.

It's normal. My heat pump does the same thing.

Interior Heating Element

During this defrost cycle , the indoor unit might be operating with the fan blowing cool air.
